Summarized Case Study 7-4: Teenage Turmoil
Living with a teenager can be like living with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde …
Lisa and her teenage daughter had a conversation that went along these lines:
DAUGHTER: You don’t get it! You don’t have a clue how I feel!
LISA: Sweetie, I do get it. You want to go away for the weekend with your friends. You want to camp out on the beach and surf. I understand camping out and surfing. I did those things. What I will not permit is your going without an adult in the crowd.
DAUGHTER: I’m not you! It’s different! What are you thinking? That I’m dumb enough to do drugs or something? Why don’t you trust me?
LISA: Of course not. I do trust you, and I know and like all your friends. I really do trust you. But I don’t trust some lunatic who might stumble across half a dozen teenage girls camping on a beach. You may not go without an adult.
DAUGHTER: I HATE you!
Sound familiar? You can change the details of the scenario, but the crux of the message stays the same. To a teenager, parents simply don’t get it! Slam. Bang.
Lisa’s daughter practices tapping—she became interested because she was curious about it.
Sometime between her final angry outburst and when she emerged from her room thirty minutes later, Lisa’s daughter had gone through her tapping routine and was noticeably more relaxed.
DAUGHTER: Mom, do you think Uncle Dave would like to haul out his surfboard this weekend and go with us?
While tapping won’t stop your teenagers from having emotional outbursts and experiencing inner turmoil, it will offer them a chance to calm down and collect their thoughts in a rational way so battles aren’t drawn out and compromises can be made. Their stresses will be minimized, and they will be much more pleasant company.
