Chapter Eighteen

Indian summer had arrived with a warm breeze. Fall would seek the last blast of warmth before the November rains bore down on the city. Leigha cast her face to the sun. Her sisters chose an outdoor cafe down in the Village for their lunch date. She picked a table close to the windows, away from the street. Still nervous about the Range Rovers, she didn’t want to make herself an obvious target.

Her face absorbed the warm rays of the cloudless day. She sensed her siblings nearby. Up the street, two beautiful women were laughing, walking arm in arm. They had no idea she was about to rock their world.

“Hey, sister, what’s up? You look very rosy, almost like you’re having sex or something. And your hair is down? What do you think, Mar?” Raquelle never let anyone get away with having sex and not acknowledging it.

“Yeah, your eyes are bright, and you’re glowing. Looks like someone needs to spill the beans.” They laughed while she remained quiet.

Her fingers twisted in her lap under the table. “I wish that was all I came here to tell you. You two better sit down and order. Then I need to share my story with you.”

Their faces fell, becoming sober. They looked at each other with anticipation, plunking themselves in a chair on either side of her.

The tension grew between them as they scanned the menu to order. Their eyes peered over the menu to check her out.

Her appetite waned since making her announcement. Several times her hand went to smooth down the strands of hair that might escape the absent bun. The new her wanted to wear her hair down, but it was throwing her off. She still felt like her old self with her sisters.

Once the server left, they sat in silence. Mara and Raquelle exchanged glances, waiting for her to start her tale.

She stared down at her laced fingers. “When I was modeling, I was part of a group of people that traveled together to photo shoots. You need to understand those people became my family.” Her fingers played with the edge of the plate in front of her.

Raquelle interrupted, “You were never around much growing up. I remember missing you terribly.” Her eyes squinted together.

“I never felt part of our family. Papa and I were never close. I think we all have our issues with him. But he made me feel like an outcast and unwanted. Modeling became a blessing for me in so many ways. I was happy and carefree.” She folded her hands in her lap, clasping them together. Biting her lower lip, nausea rolled through her at the thought of telling her sisters her horror. She always possessed the strength among them. Her story would reveal her weakness. Telling them became harder, knowing her past would bring them pain.

“Does this have something to do with the nightmares?” Mara’s eyes tightened.

Her vision became liquid glass. She pushed forward to uncover her secret. “Yes. I finally discovered what they were about.
