Ella

I stand in front of the window as the men we left behind, and the Hellions, pull up to the shop, not bothering to shut the truck off before the President, Country Boy, comes barreling in. For some odd reason, the couple reuniting before me has caught my attention. They’re captivating. There’s something about them, a spark that usually is only seen in a new couple, but the way they’re drawn to the other speaks volumes. It may be new-ish, but I can already tell their foundation has been cemented, just like Hydro and me.

“Sugar,” Sara says, rushing to her old man. “Happy to see me?”

“Always.” The Hellions president’s voice is rough, throaty. It isn’t hard to see the worry he had for his woman. “I’m sorry,” he whispers.

From there, I decide that being an interloper isn’t warranted, there’s not going to be any plots of revenge spoken of, so I ignore them and head over to my President. A man that I hope to one day call mine, that is when we stop dancing around the subject.

“How are you holding up?” I ask him, bumping his shoulder with mine. This situation is a sticky one, no doubt about it. But one thing I want him to remember is that even though Chuck started this union of clubs out a little bumpy, we rectified it—mostly. Not the greatest first impression, at first, we looked like incapable fools, but at least they’ll know we’re honorable and keep our word. Wanting to see the tension leave from around his eyes, I decide to be a smartass. “That was some fucked up shit, huh?”

“It’s my fault this all took place, Ella.” His face is stoic, he’s wearing his presidential mask, but I can see the crestfallen look in his eyes, even if he’s buried it and is hiding it from onlookers. I know him better than anyone, so I can see it distinctly.

“How can you say that? I know you think you can command everything in your world and it’ll fall into place, Hydro, but newsflash, you can’t control other people’s minds nor their mental illness… there’s no foresight for something like that. Some things are outta your hands, we just have to work with what we have and what we know. You may be the man in charge, but you’re not all-knowing. The only thing we can do from here is clean up this mess and prove that we’re going to follow through with our promises. Any ideas on how we’re going to take out the trash? He doesn’t have many that’ll miss him or notice his absence right away. Outside of his therapist and case worker, they may notice at some point after he doesn’t check in with them. He’s known to skip a few of his scheduled appointments, but he does eventually after call in or visit their offices when he runs low on his psych pills.”

“I let him leave knowing he was unstable. I’d hoped he could make it on his own and that we wouldn’t ever hear from him again.
