CHAPTER NINE

Deidra

When we’d arrived back in camp after the cemetery, Aggie had handed us Jerred’s saddle-bags and blushed. I didn’t think he had it in him, but apparently the shredded linen nesting Jerred’s cock bothered him.

After we got back from washing, changing, and bandaging Jerred’s bites, Fitz gave me a long-suffering look and a sigh. “Guess I might as well welcome you to the family,” he said, giving us a look Jerred interpreted for me as his martyr face.

Apparently he was Jerred’s half-brother. Without the anger, he was quite nice, and later he told me stories of his adventures with Aggie and the Expeditionary Force. “And there I was,” he said, waving one arm. He’d been peeling potatoes beside me while Aggie started a fire and Jerred took his turn looking for an escaped donkey. “In the cavern with three ghouls and an ogre. They was big. Bigger’n houses—”

“They’re actually about yay-high,” said Aggie, reaching up to a point just over his head.

“Don’t interrupt,” said Fitz. He threw a potato at the scrawny private and took another from the saddlebag. “Backed against the wall I was, with Aggie off behind me—don’t say it, Aggie!”

“Wouldn’t think of it, Sarge.”

“And they rushed me—the ghouls first, with the ogre right behind them. A’swinging their axes—whoosh!”

Jerred slipped his arms around me and kissed me on the nape. When he stood, I found myself with a handful of cave lilies glowing in my lap like amber stars. “My brother telling you ogre stories?”

Fitz flushed beet-red. “Ogre stories? These are adventure stories where I smite the enemy and bring glory to the kingdom!”

“Right you are, Sarge.” Aggie dropped another potato in the now boiling water

Jerred sat down beside me and slipped his arm around me. He’d told me we were about three days ride from Dwarfholme, and the farther we got from Cavendish Castle, the more I missed my mother. Back when I thought I was dreaming, I thought I’d wake up and see her again. Now I just felt sick. Because of the lighting, it was hard to tell, but it felt like we’d been riding forever. I wished I could send her a message so she’d know I was safe.

Something boomed in the distance, and I heard the sound of hooves.

The biggest dwarf I’d ever seen galloped into camp. Rugged and muscular with the build of a Greek god and wavy auburn hair, he slid off his mount and walked past Aggie like the smaller dwarf wasn’t there. Except for a heavy steel chain around his incredibly toned hips, and a mesh ball sack under his impressively long cock, he was naked. “I’ve been looking for you,” he said to Jerred.

Jerred parked himself in front of me. “What are you doing here?” he asked, rude for the first time to someone other than me.

Fitz looked away and so did Aggie, giving the two males a sort of semi-privacy.

The god smiled, revealing big white teeth and a perfect smile. Everything about him was perfect, right down to the backs of his knuckles.
