CHAPTER 22

My head fogged as I tried to open my eyes, but they were reluctant. Rain still poured down outside my window, beating against the glass. After a few minutes, I sat up, looking around the room. It was dark, darker than it should have been for the clock saying 2:00. I looked around to see I was now alone. Brian was gone.

I’m dreaming.

I looked down at myself, my hands, everything feeling too real for sleep, but I had to be. Brian wouldn’t leave me.

“You’re getting better,” the voice said, words cheerful – more so than I could remember.

I pulled the blankets closer, fighting away the chill. “Why do you keep coming to me?”

“Because you need me, just as I need you, and right now I need you to begin to test yourself. What is reality, and what is a dream?”

Her question confused me. “I know the difference.” My words barely convinced me, let alone her.

“Yes, but what in your dreams is actually in your reality? You need to hold onto what your mind is trying to tell you – every piece of it.”

The voice left, leaving me in silence. I stood, looking around. What did she mean? How did I know this wasn’t just nonsense my mind continued to make up, like some psychological condition? The likelihood of that diminished. I wasn’t losing my mind, ultimately, but what did I need to remember?

A wolf moved outside, walking through the trees. I turned to the window that opened, unable to pick up a scent. Paws impatiently paced against the ground. The rain fell harder, pulsating against the glass. My bedroom wall shook, knocking the curtains off, before sinking into the ground. I walked forward, drops stinging against my skin. I folded my arms against my chest, building up the courage to walk towards the trees, following the sound of the paws until they stopped. At first, I couldn’t make anything out. It took my mind time to process that I stared at a black wolf, with blue eyes.

“Hello!” I shouted as loud as I could in the rain. The figure changed, walking forward. “Who are – David?”

The rain stopped around me, silence becoming heavy. David walked out of the trees, moving closer. The goatee he started four years ago was now gone. His hair looked shaggy, more than I had seen him have since our high school days. He smiled, wrapping his arms around me. I fought to move my arms. I wanted to embrace him. I tried to laugh with relief and enjoy the moment, but I couldn’t move. The closer he pulled me, the more I realized something wasn’t right. He smelled different, not human, and didn’t feel like the man I knew. His muscles were more defined, almost engulfing. He pulled away after a moment, putting his hand behind my head and kissing me. The unfamiliarity of his lips made me want to pull away as he kissed me harder. This wasn’t David.

He soon pulled away, laying his head on mine.
