Chapter 14

Portia froze on the spot, her hand in her pocket where the cufflinks were tucked in, her gaze torn between the frozen siblings and the monster in front of them. The torn sentiment didn’t just end with her gaze as she felt it inside out, gnawing at her until she wanted to tear her skin off in despair. Instead, she swallowed, forcing every little thing down until she was left with nothingness.

With a blank expression, she surged into action, she strode to the center of the room—essentially, planting herself right in between the siblings and the larger figure without making an obvious stance of deviance.

The look on Jememiah’s face was one of pure nerves, while Kinto’s held a quiet calm. The nerves got to her, calling to her own, a fleeting sense that she stomped at again. But the large, toad-like creature caught on to it, finally glancing in her direction. Its yellow eyes glowed brighter, then dimmed.

“Portia.”

Just her name, and she already wanted to scamper off and never return. But she faced the figure with as much calm as she could muster.

“You’re here.”

“Of course I’m here. There’s been some strange presence in my territory, and I don’t like it.”

Shock rippled over Kinto, then Jememiah, mirror faces that locked in on her. The dark wisps that curled around them didn’t come for her, and the only factor that aligned with this was that the master still trusted her. She needed to keep that trust, needed the figure to believe that she was on his side a hundred percent. If she played this right, she could get them all out of here. If she didn’t…the consequences were grave, a reality she didn’t want to face.

Portia called on her poker face to stay as it was, tilting her head while she glanced at the two carelessly. Her gaze rested on Kinto a bit more, close to locking in before she turned away and brushed them off.

“Oh? They don’t seem that intimidating. Are you sure that they’re the strange presence? They’re probably lost and just need to find their way to wherever they’d come from…”

“They came from that world. They don’t deserve to live.”

Jememiah made choking sounds but didn’t move. Panic flared, and it was all Portia could do not to turn and go to her. Instead, she gave the figure a respectful but baleful look.

“We can still use them. I can still use them. Don’t torture them yet.”

The dark wisps gathered in a corner like a ball, the figure caressing it lovingly. When it touched her feet, the pungent effect hit her nostrils. Unable to fight it, her muscles shook, a movement that her master took note of with a gleam in his eyes. Before it could wrap around her and play, she cleared her throat.

“Besides, I have one of the artifacts—well, not artifacts but items. It can serve as leverage until I get the other one.”

The wisps receded, crawling back to him. The glowing eyes narrowed into slits before a blur of motion halted inches from her face—his rough, swollen one so close.
