Chapter Seven

Luci

Luci tried desperately to stay awake, knowing how much it sucked when your company fell asleep on a road trip, but it was hard. For a start, the luxury car Angel had rented had the most comfortable seats Luci had ever sat on. Then there was the fact that Angel had switched to new-age Celtic music for the last chunk of the drive. It's like she wants me to fall asleep. Luci turned over and looked at Angel.

"Just go to sleep, it's fine." Angel didn't take her eyes off the road, but Luci could tell from the tone of her voice that she meant it.

It didn't stop her from asking, "Are you sure?"

"Very. You didn't mind when I dozed for the start of our trip."

"I still can't believe you fell asleep right after you'd had coffee." Luci shook her head, remembering how Angel had passed out almost as soon as she'd finished the thermos of coffee and stayed asleep for the next two hours.

Ordinarily, it would've really annoyed Luci, but she was slightly relieved Angel had passed out like that. She wasn't entirely sure of all the quirks of the car and didn't want Angel to think she was a total moron. Not to mention, that it meant she got to listen to very cheesy pop without worrying about Angel judging her. At least, until she woke up. Thankfully, when she had, instead of teasing Luci, she'd joined in.

"You can use this shawl as a blanket." Angel reached behind her, still focusing on the road and sticking her tongue out slightly as she tried to also find the shawl.

Luci was about to offer to help - her sleepy brain not quite willing to find words - when Angel triumphed and threw it at her. Luci caught it, and immediately noticed how soft it was. It smells like Angel. She breathed it in slightly and wrapped it around her, lowering the seat and curling into a ball. A moment later, she was asleep and dreaming.

She was still in the car, but Angel had pulled over. Luci looked around, trying to figure out why they had stopped and stretched out. Angel was looking at her curiously.

"What happened?" Luci asked. "Why did we stop?"

"You said something weird in your dream."

"You stopped because I said something weird."

"You said my name. That you wanted me."

Luci blushed furiously, unsure what to say to that. She ran a hand through her hair, debating whether or not to lie and say Angel must've been mistaken.

"You wanted me to kiss you. That's what got my attention in the first place." Angel leaned closer, continuing her story, "I didn't realize you were asleep until we pulled over and I turned around to look at you."

Luci's heart was hammering away in her chest like a woodpecker. Her breath caught, and she wondered what Angel was saying. She pulled over because she thought I wanted to kiss her? Luci shook her head; did that mean Angel wanted to kiss her too?

"Why did you stop?"

"I couldn't kiss you if I was driving.
