Chapter 22

Rhavana

Rhavana dropped the chuck of meat she’d cut from her meal and hurried over to the dragon’s side. She looked from him to the image on the wall.

A tall woman in full armor was sitting astride a dragon. She gripped a large bow in one hand while the other rested upon the beast in a way that conveyed a loving partnership.

“She was one of the greatest of the Dragon Archers,” Kolaith said, then added. “She was also partnered to my great, great, great grandfather.”

“Dragon Archer?” Rhavana parroted. “I didn’t know humans ever lived with dragons.”

“Yes. An offshoot of your own people. There had been some climatic upheaval in their lands, forcing them to migrate south and west looking for more plentiful prey. Eventually they entered dragon territory. They were wise enough to be respectful to my kind and soon our two peoples were exchanging food and stories. Before long, an enduring friendship was born.”

“I had no idea,” Rhavana said while trying to keep her voice calm. It wasn’t easy with the way excitement was stirring in her blood. “Can I meet them? I’d love to speak with one of them and compare our ancestral stories.”

“Regrettably, like your people and my own, the plague the soul-mages set loose over two hundred and fifty years ago took its toll on the Dragon Archers. According to the records, nearly all of the males died within a few days of catching the illness. As for the females, many of the surviving women were left barren.” Kolaith came to a halt in his tale to sigh out a deeply mournful sound. “Later, many of those women died alongside their dragon mounts in the blood final battle against the soul-mages.”

Rhavana felt sorrow that she would never get to meet one of those glorious looking dragon riders in person. And she also felt sorrow that so many of the mighty dragons had died destroying the soul-mages’ kingdom.

His story had one benefit. It renewed her hatred of the soul-mages.

They would pay for all the tragedy they’d visited up the five kingdoms.

“They were the fiercest of warrior, so say the old stories,” Kolaith rumbled softly. “But the last Dragon Archer died without child when I was just a hatchling.”

He turned to look a her, not saying anything for many moments. Then so softly she might almost have imaged it, “I image they were much like you.”

Kolaith turned then, facing away to study the image of one of the greatest of the Dragon Archers.

She thought he was done speaking, but he surprised her again.

“There is another cave in my territory that once belonged to the line of those brave women and men and their dragon mounts. I will make sure we visit it if our hunt for the mages takes up in that direction.”

“I would like that,” Rhavana whispered as her throat grew tight and tears flooded her eyes for reasons she didn’t truly understand. “I would like that very much.”

A warm wait pressed against her hips and back. It happened so slowly, the slight pressure didn’t alarm her.
