Chapter Six

“That was amazing.” Getty leaned into Donny as they walked back to the apartment building. They’d stopped at Jake’s to grab a cup of coffee, and Donny wasn’t ready to go home just yet.

He slid his arm around Getty and felt a kind of peace he’d never experienced before. Right there in his chest, and it made him want to smile, want to shout in joy. He had the perfect man curled into his side.

Donny couldn’t believe how deep the feeling was inside of him. As if it could erase a lot of his fucked-up past, purge the memories and replace them with happy ones. It was as if his emotions were amplified with Getty. Warmth. Desire. Possessiveness. Pure fucking bliss.

Now he finally understood what the other warriors felt when with their mates, and that made Donny want to protect him that much more, because he never wanted those feelings to end—never wanted those pistons to stop firing in his chest.

“I told you the wings were good.” Donny took a sip of his coffee. “Next I’m going to take you to Malcor’s.”

“The restaurant we just passed?” But Getty wasn’t looking behind them. He seemed ready to explore the rest of the city. The wonderment in his eyes made Donny smile. Made his damn jaws hurt from grinning so widely.

How could anyone abuse the trust that was shining all over Getty’s face? How could his own father discard it for his own selfishness? Donny had been in the house when the couple was fighting, had been ready to tear the woman apart for digging her claws into him.

He’d witnessed the grief on Getty’s face, the uncertainty, the hopelessness. His mate had threatened to put the woman out on her ass, and Donny had been ready to do just that. He needed a fucking medal for his restraint, and Donny never wanted Getty to return there, not when it brought him so much misery to be around the two.

“I feel like an old man.” Getty chuckled. “I want to explore, but I’m tired and ready to go back to your place.”

His mate had had a long day, and an even longer evening with their lovemaking session then dinner.

“I can show you what else Serenity City has to offer another time.” He kissed Getty’s forehead as they walked toward the alley that would lead them back inside.

“I’d like that.” Getty nodded. “When you mentioned the demon realm, I had a totally different picture in my head, but this”—Getty swung his arm out to encompass everything around him—“it’s amazing, Donnchadh. It feels so…magical.”

What was magical was his name on Getty’s lips.

His mate snickered.

“What’s so funny, shorty?” They were lingering at the mouth of the alley, sipping their coffee, Donny’s arm still around Getty.

“The demon realm a magical place.” He looked up at Donny. “But you’re a demon, and you definitely performed magic earlier.”

That fucking blush would be Donny’s undoing. His mate was so quiet, sweet, and reflective most of the time. A knit worked its way through his brow whenever he was deep in thought.
