CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I stood in the middle of my living room, trying to remember if I’d packed bug spray when the sound of a car horn interrupted me and caused Jupiter to leap up and run out onto the balcony. I looked out and saw Cass emerge from the Subaru and head to the door of my building. Even from here I could tell that the car was already bursting with stuff. I was doubtful that there’d be space for me, Jupiter, and all our things as part of the group of four people, three dogs, and an awful lot of beer heading to Salt Spring for a couple of days of camping.

I had filled almost a whole backpack with stuff for Jupiter, and now I looked at him accusingly. “Why can't you be a Chihuahua or, I dunno, hunt your own vegan dog kibble or something?” He was too busy pacing back and forth to pay any attention to me though, and Cass's knock on my front door sent him into a tailspin.

Jupiter leapt at Cass as she walked in and I couldn’t tell if she yelled “Woah!” because of him or the pile of stuff I’d amassed for the trip. It soon became clear it was because of the latter, and she exclaimed again, “What the fuck, dude? What. The. Fuck.” Cass started rummaging through the things as I tried to explain why I needed them all. “We don't need two picnic blankets. Or this huge camping stove. Or, is this a box of paints?”

“Ugh, I thought I might get a chance to sketch?” I said, optimistically.

“You won't,” Cass said and pushed the box aside with her foot. “The only sketchy thing happening this weekend will be some drunken skinny dipping.” She grinned without looking at me, “If you're lucky.” Cass picked up the bungeed-together jumble of tent, Thermarest, and sleeping bags (mine and Jupiter's) and hitched the lot over her shoulder, then hoisted the bag of food up and tucked it under the same arm. With her free hand she carefully picked up the cooler of beers, then said, “Get the door will ya. Precious cargo here.”

I held the door open and Jupiter followed her down to the elevator as I scrambled to get my bag and the food hamper. I decided not to take the bag of books I'd planned on finding some quiet time to read. This weekend was going to be anything but quiet it seemed.

As we got to the car, Jupiter and Hobbes greeted each other exuberantly before a vicious sounding Weimeraner popped his head up and scared the bejeebers out of me. This must be Rufus, Cass’s friend’s dog. Jupiter retreated and Madison got hold of her dog and told him to play nice. Unfortunately, Jupiter decided he wasn’t going anywhere near Rufus and ran around to the front of the car where he climbed in on top of Madison’s girlfriend, who was not too pleased to suddenly have a seventy-five pound lap dog drooling on her anxiously.
