Chapter 15

Daisy

With my only free finger, I punched in the code to open my lobby door because I couldn’t for the life of me find my keys in my purse. Riley shoved the slow-moving door open and waited for me to step in first.

“So I finally get to see inside Daisy Wright’s apartment,” he teased, following me to the elevator. He pressed the button with his elbow as we were both bogged down with “stuff.”

I gave him a sardonic look and stepped into the elevator when the doors parted. “Fifth floor, please.”

He hit the number five with his elbow.

“How did you know there was going to be a fair on Gwinny Island?” I asked, adjusting all my bags and the giant stuffed orca Riley had won for me at the ring toss booth.

He shrugged. “I do my research. They have one every Saturday starting on Memorial Day and going all the way to Labor Day. Draws a lot of people from all over. It’s part of their big tourism draw. And it’s nice that they offer the water taxi right back to downtown. I asked Vickie and Stephen if they could drop us off on Gwinny when I called and made our reservations and they said that it wouldn’t be a problem.”

I shook my head; I was in complete awe of this man. “Well, it was a fantastic day. And you, Dr. McMillan, have quite a knack for carnival games. Were you a carnie in a past life? A grifter, perhaps?”

He snorted, but his smile had me hiding my swoon by burying my face in the plush orca’s head. “I worked at an arcade when I was in junior high, got pretty good at Skee-Ball, ring toss and a few other games.”

“Pretty good is an understatement. Those carnival workers were getting worried you were going to take every last one of their prizes.”

He snorted again just as the elevator chimed and the doors opened up onto my floor.

“I’m just down this way.” Now I was starting to worry if I’d cleaned my apartment enough to have guests. I wasn’t a slob by any stretch of the imagination. I kept my house in the same condition I kept the rest of my life: in order, clean and presentable. But now I couldn’t remember if the bra and underwear I’d hung up in my bathroom to dry were still there or if I’d pulled them down and put them away before I left that morning.

Shit.

We reached my door, and the silence that fell between us made it difficult to take a deep breath.

“You’re sure you don’t want some of these?” I asked, gesturing awkwardly to his armload and my armload of carnival prizes.

His head shook. “Naw, I won them for you.”

“Yeah, but don’t you have a niece? And then you could give some to the kids at the hospital.” I’d never been a big “toy” person. I had my favorite doll and stuffed animal when I was a kid, but I much preferred reading, drawing or doing something practical or learning a new life skill.
