Chapter Twelve

Keys jangled, fumbling between her fingers. They hit the floor with a thud. The two of them had been outside her door for several minutes already.

“Oops!” she chuckled. “I dropped them. I don’t usually have a problem opening the door. This is so-o-o weird.”

“Right.” He glanced at her. “Lean against the wall for me.” He positioned her shoulders so she was well supported. “Just like that.” He let go slowly, taking one step back. “Don’t move, and please don’t throw up on me again.”

“Okay,” Emily snorted.

He bent down, grabbing the keys. Just as he stood, she slid into a sitting position. “Great,” he huffed. “I’m going to open the door. Then we’ll get you up.”

“Okay.”

“At least you are easy to please.” Desmond tried several keys before finding the one which opened the door. “Come on.” He lifted her to a standing position again, tossing one of her arms over his shoulders. “Let’s get you inside. Here we go.” He plopped her on the couch, but she refused to stay put, standing immediately after.

“This is a cute apartment you have. So where’s the infamous fish?” Desmond asked. “I was hoping to meet the little fella.”

“The fish?”

“Dr. D?” Desmond reminded.

“Oh, yeah. The fish!” She swatted at the air as if shooing away a fly. “He died just the other day. I had to flush him.”

“I’m sorry,” Desmond said sympathetically. “That must be why he was on your mind. You must really miss him.”

“Yup,” Emily agreed. “I sure do. You have no idea what he meant to me.” She wobbled, almost falling down.

“You should change,” Desmond suggested.

“You should change,” Emily snorted, giggling. “That’s the bathroom.” She pointed at a door down the hall. “Way back there.”

“Are you going to be okay, if I leave you alone for a minute?” Desmond sighed. Asking was pointless. She wasn’t going to be okay until she slept off the booze. The girl was one drink short of alcohol poisoning.

“I’ve lived all my life without you... so I think so.” Emily’s face scrunched up. “I’m just a little drunk. It’ll go away.”

“Do you drink this much often?” Desmond asked, flipping on the bathroom light. He left the door open just a crack to hear if she was in trouble.

“No-o-o,” Emily chuckled. “Some of the people I work with suggested I needed a night out. I thought I’d make the most of it. I probably shouldn’t have tried to break my record.”

“Probably not,” Desmond agreed. “You need to put water beside your bed tonight and hydrate. Alcohol can wreak havoc on your system.”

There was no response.

“Emily?” he called out, pulling a sweatshirt over his head. “Emily?” He peeked around a corner. She’d slid down to the floor again, this time passing out once she reached the bottom. “Up we go.” He carried her limp body to the bed.

He gave her a medical once-over one more time. “You are one lucky girl,” he chuckled, heading to the kitchen. Come morning a glass of water would be a welcome sight on her nightstand.
