A part of me was actually nervous as I waited for Meredith’s car to arrive, and I couldn’t explain why. It wasn’t as if we hadn’t planned to be very visible over the next few days, and the driver had texted me that she’d been picked up successfully. Nonetheless, there were butterflies in my stomach.

The sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb and I stepped forward to open the door and offer Meredith my arm.

My breath caught in my throat. She was stunning in a fitted black and silver dress that ended just above the knee. The top was a tasteful v-neck, and her flaming red hair tumbled over one shoulder in soft waves.

She smiled up at me. “Close your mouth dear.”

I realized I’d been gaping. “It’s hard not to stare when you leave me speechless every day.”

She ducked her head, but not before I caught the beginnings of a blush spreading across her cheeks. Somehow the reaction made me smile.

“Shall we?” I asked as I led her a couple steps away from the curb.

She took a moment, swallowed, then nodded at me. “Yes.”

I dropped my hand to the small of her back and guided her toward the door. We’d spent a bit of time discussing appropriate contact when in public, and while make-out sessions were off the table, since they weren’t really appropriate in public anyway, natural contact such as my hands on her arms or waist, and gentle or flirty kisses were allowed.

“I’ve never been here,” she said softly.

“I hope seafood is ok.”

She looked over at me, laughter dancing in her eyes. “What kind of New England girl would I be if I didn’t like seafood?”

I smiled. “Good to know.”

The restaurant wasn’t as high-end as I’d hoped, but it was the best I could do with under twenty-four hours to secure a reservation. It was probably for the best though.

I’d made my decision as I made the dinner arrangements. The first date was to get a taste of how we meshed, then lunch in a popular place for those in the upper echelons of business. I’d propose on Wednesday, from a table with a view at the hottest up-and-coming restaurant in the city. Thursday’s lunch would allow her to flash her ring in public, and Friday I’d managed to secure a chef’s table at another of the most coveted reservations in town with enough time after to treat her to something special.

Even I knew that the week had been nearly a miracle to pull off. But something in me said she was worth it, even if the engagement was a sham.

We were seated in the middle of a grand dining room decorated in a contemporary style, and I immediately felt the eyes of the gossip-hungry on us. Meredith might not have been somebody they knew at a glance, but I recognized easily a third of the people at the nearby tables.

It was a good start to the week, and as the first round of wine was brought it only got better.
