I FIGURE IT’S in my best interest to hide out in my room after Mom leaves for Atlanta. I’m so not ready to face my aunt and uncle. Mom’s already lectured me and I’m not feeling another one, but I know Aunt Phoebe’s not going to let me slide on this. I know it.

Alyssa blows into my room without knocking. “Mama just said that she’s changed her mind about Stephen and Madison coming over. She says we still haven’t learned anything.” She wipes away a tear.

“That’s so wrong!” I complain. “Aunt Phoebe’s being so wishy-washy about all this and it’s not like we’ve done anything wrong.”

“Do you really believe that, Divine?” Alyssa asks me, her voice breaking. She takes a seat on the edge of my bed. “You don’t think what we did was wrong?”

“It’s not like we went out and got married for real, Alyssa.”

“But they don’t want us married either way. If it wasn’t something bad we wouldn’t have been so sneaky about it.”

“Hmmph! I don’t know about you but I don’t want them all in my business.”

“I know why Mama changed her mind. What we did wasn’t cool. I expected it.”

“Well, I think it’s unfair.”

“Take it up with my parents then.”

“Yeah, right,” I mutter. “Like I want Aunt Phoebe to lose it on me. I don’t think so. ”

Later in bed, I think back to everything my mom, Aunt Phoebe and Uncle Reed said to me. I guess I can understand them being concerned, but I think it’s mostly that they’re worried Alyssa and I are going to run out and have sex with our “husbands.”

Although they don’t know it, I almost did.

I sit up in bed.

“Are they right to be worried?” I whisper. “I’m curious about sex, but I didn’t do it, God. I said no to Madison and I meant it.”

I couldn’t deny that if we hadn’t been pretending to be married I wouldn’t have risked skipping school with Madison. I went to his house with him because we wanted to celebrate our marriage.

A marriage that isn’t real.

I have everything under control, I tell myself. I said no and that’s all that matters.

Aunt Phoebe always says that what’s done in the dark will come to light. Well, I’m praying that God will keep this one in darkness—I’m already in enough trouble.
