"Hey, sexy."
After the class with the gargoyle, I was much more cautious of the one I had seen on my date with Dyson. I was jumpy too. So much so that when Dyson appeared at my elbow and spoke suddenly, I jumped almost out of my skin.
I pressed a hand to my chest, over my racing heart. "Dear gods, don't sneak up on a person," I said, once I'd caught my breath.
He grinned. "Sorry."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "You don't look sorry."
His grin just widened as he draped his arm over my shoulder. "I heard you created a monster," he said casually.
"No, I just met you," I said sweetly.
He threw back his head and laughed. "I guess I deserved that after scaring you."
"Damn right you did," I told him. Then I sighed. "You're right though." I filled him in on the whole gargoyle thing while we walked through the academy.
He looked thoughtful. "A magically created creature and a shifter are very different animals, generally speaking. Assuming the gargoyle we saw was a shifter, then you'll only be in danger if he wants you harmed."
"And if it was created by magic?" I asked. "Blasting it didn't seem to do much of anything to the one I conjured. It shook it off like I'd shoved it with my hand."
"It wouldn't matter if it was a gargoyle or a unicorn. If it was created to attack you, it will." Dyson shrugged.
"That's reassuring," I said sarcastically. "Except I didn't create it to attack me." I frowned. "Not that I know of, anyway. I'm pretty sure I don't have a death wish."
"Most magical creatures just do what their nature tells them to," he said slowly. "A magical dog will bite, bark or pee on your leg. Same with a shifter, but only if you ask nicely." He grinned.
"Under no circumstances would I ask you to do that," I said dryly.
He pouted. "Shame." His eyes shone, so I knew he was joking. At least, I hoped he was. I didn't want to shame anyone for their kink, but this one wasn't one of mine.
He ran a hand over his hair. "Magically created creatures are usually only aggressive if that's their nature, or if the witch or wizard told them to. Then they'll attack whatever is in front of them."
"I don't recall telling the gargoyle to damage academy property," I said slowly. "Since gargoyles aren't real, as such, then the gods only know what their nature is."
"Aggression is usually part of the existing spell; the tattoo or in this case, the link. I'm not sure why an academic website would have it inbuilt like that. That seemsâbadly thought out."
I snorted. "Ya think?"
He laughed. "Just a little bit. Still, no harm done. Although, think nice thoughts next time you conjure up any creatures, just in case."
"You think I did it?" If I had imbued the gargoyle with its not-so-charming personality without thinking, I wanted to know about it.
Dyson shrugged "It's possible. Magic isn't an exact science, especially when you're new to using it the way you're learning to here.
