But size or number is not why I mention diatoms. We’re starting this chapter with the humble diatom because of the way they look.

I’m looking at a picture of a diatom right now. It’s a eucentric diatom – which means that it’s round. In fact it looks rather like a microscopic flying saucer. This one has spines that radiate from its centre to the edges. There’s another with indentations that make it resemble a tiny hubcap. And here’s one that looks exactly like a fat coin, with thousands of tiny raised bumps around the edge and a strange, symmetrical ‘head’ in the middle.
