Deacon’s mother was outside the hospital smoking a cigarette, standing with two big bikers. She was the epitome of a fiftyish year old biker babe. She had lots of long dyed blonde hair, dressed a bit like an 80’s glam hair band groupie, but she was definitely beautiful. Big green eyes and a great figure but a bit of a smoker’s mouth and she wore a lot of make-up and right now there was a lot of black smudged makeup under her eyes; she’d been doing plenty of crying. She put her cigarette out on the ground, crushing it with her heel, and practically ran and threw herself into Deacon’s arms. He let go of my hand to catch her.

She put her hands on his cheeks, “My baby!”

“Mom,” Deacon gritted his teeth and stared at the two bikers in front of her, “Guys.”

Deke hugged both guys with one handed back slaps. His mother didn’t move out of the way so as the men approached Deacon, he tried to let go of her but she was crying into his leather so he kept hold of her with one arm and shook hands with both guys, “Brother,” they each greeted him. They were in Dom cuts and jeans. One was older, greying tidy beard, chest-length silver and pepper hair (mostly silver), with a kindness in his silver eyes. The other was younger, around Deacon’s age, maybe a bit older, almost as tall as Deacon, and had a bit of scruff and messy short dark hair with the sides shaved.

Everyone looked stressed.

“Any change?”

“She’s not awake yet, baby,” Deacon’s mother said, “Her brain started swelling. They gotta keep her asleep to work on gettin’ the swelling in her head to go d-down. It started to go up and they’ve put her into a coma.” She choked up and Deacon let go of her and put his hands in his pockets. I sucked on my bottom lip, feeling the worry coming off him.

“Mom, this is my girlfriend, Ella. Ella, Michelle Valentine --- Shelly. This is Edge and that’s his dad, Rudy.”

Shelly glanced up as if she hadn’t seen that I was even there before that second. She wiped at her eyes and gave me what I could only guess was an assessing look.

I had my hair up in a top knot, a pair of boyfriend jeans rolled to above my ankles, and I was wearing a long and drapey pink V-neck t-shirt. I had sunglasses on my head and no make-up on, pink flip flops. This had been an early morning call and long road trip so it wouldn’t have been my preferred ‘meeting-the-mom’ outfit. She spared a glance at me like she found me lacking and didn’t say anything. She looked back to Deacon and frowned.

Before I had a chance to ponder that, Rudy moved over and embraced me in a bear hug, lifting me right off the ground, “Good to meet ya, Ella. Ain’t you a sweet little thing?” He gave me a warm smile and put me back on my feet.
