Ella had awoken to burning cuts, pounding bruises, and hovering sisters. Ava had returned and heard the whole story—from demons killing humans to Flynn trying to rehabilitate them. After that, Ava wasn’t really in a chatty mood. She stormed out of the house. The screeching rubber of her tires told Ella that Ava was pretty pissed off. Cheese and rice, they were just trying to protect her.

Lucas had gone after her, and several hours later, Ava was ready to talk. It was hard for Ava to understand their decision to keep this from her, but she relented.

Her words still echoed in Ella’s ears, “The next person to keep something from me gets turned into a frog!”

Big threat there . . . the irony was she could probably do it.

Yet, in all seriousness, Ella had been injured and severely weakened. She had spent three days in her bed. She waited for Flynn to come to her. Day after day had gone by, and still he had refused.

Thea would come to her at night, sit on the edge of her bed, and tell her of Flynn’s arrival, well wishes, and dismissal. Ella always nodded. “You told him I wanted to see him, right?”

The answer was always the same, “Yes.”

What was wrong with her? Why didn’t he want to see her? She couldn’t help but think that he had been so shocked and disgusted to see her emerge from the cabin, ready to kill his kind, that he couldn’t stand to look at her now.

She had seen him fighting with the one that had held the dagger over him, but maybe he thought the rest of them could have been saved.

All Ella had intended on doing was keeping him safe, but when she saw him tied to the tree with the demon holding a dagger above him, she had lost it—totally and completely lost it.

She could feel the power of the flames on her skin even before she called for them. The flames fed off her rage, consuming her body, and turning her into some kind of candlewick.

At the time, she hadn’t cared about how frightening she had appeared. Her only goal was to protect Flynn.

Somehow, she was able to feel his pain, had been tuned in to him since the nightlight had appeared before them and entered their bodies. She felt bonded to him. The connection was so strong, it drove her to survive the smoke and to battle the one intent on harming her man.

They had obviously used a magical rope to restrain him. Otherwise, she was sure he would have come to her in the burning cabin.

Soon after the fight, the flames had left her, and so did her remaining strength. She felt like the opposite of the Energizer Bunny—depleted of power, and she was oh so tired. Ella could barely keep her eyes open, but she tried to stay awake just so she could make sure he was safe, even trying to ask him if he was before the darkness claimed her.
