CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Later that afternoon, Liz burst into the store late carrying an armful of packages.

“Did you have a nice time?” I asked, knowing the answer from the happy glow on her face.

“It was so nice! Angela and I talked and talked. And then we shopped, just like old times. I’ve missed her so much!”

“Did you get some cute things?” I asked looking at the shopping bags.

“Mostly undergarments and things Angela suggested I’ll want in time. She thinks I’m having a big baby. But then, Chad is over six feet, and I’m taller than she is, so it makes sense.”

“Well, I’m glad you had fun together. Now, I’d better go. Things are quiet here. I sold an iPad and some charging cords. Everything is listed for you.”

Liz hugged me. “Thanks, Mom! I really appreciate it!”

“You’re welcome. Now, I’m off to get ready for dinner with the Worthingtons. First, I have to spend some time with your brother. I promised to swim with him when I get home.”

“I think he’s going to make a great swimmer on the local school team when he’s a little older.”

“Me, too. You and he both move well in the water. Guess you get that from your father.”

“I wonder what he’d think of him, me, you, if he were still alive.”

“There’d be a few surprises, I’m sure. Well, I’m off. Talk to you later.”

I drove home eager to have some time with Robbie. Elena had picked him up from school and would stay with him tonight after his dinner, but I looked forward to having some time with him. He was growing fast.

Elena greeted me and left to go to one of her classes. “I’ll be back in plenty of time for you to leave for dinner at the hotel,” she said as she walked to her car.

Trudy jumped around my feet, and I leaned over to pet her. I noticed a few gray hairs around her muzzle, picked her up, and hugged her close. Originally Bernie’s dog, she’d quickly become ours. I don’t know what we’d do if she ever left us.

Robbie ran into the kitchen. “Hi, Mom! Are you ready for a swim? Elena showed me a new trick.”

“I’ll change my clothes as quickly as I can,” I promised and left him to put on my bathing suit.

When I came out of my room, Robbie grabbed my hand and tugged me outside. There had been a time when he was leery of the pool, but now we could hardly keep him out of it. After Vaughn announced that only excellent swimmers could be on the sailboat, Robbie became determined to earn that status.

Outside, the sun was heading for the horizon at a leisurely pace. It would be hours before sundown, but I liked this time of day when everyone’s pace seemed to slow. Unless you were an active six-year-old.

Robbie jumped into the pool and turned to me with a smile. “I can walk on my hands in the pool. Want to see?”

“Of course,” I said, grinning.
