1.Sam had to understand exactly what the family wanted him to do, not what they didn’t want.

2.Shouting what they didn’t want (‘No!’ or ‘Stop it!) was not good enough. He (as sometimes the kids) had had to work out by lack of shouting (negative reward) what was required.

3.Unnecessary conflict had been created by the false belief that going upstairs would make Sam ‘dominant’ and bossy.

4.There had been a potentially dangerous misinterpretation of appeasing and threat averting behaviour as guilt and Sam’s acknowledgement of wrongdoing.
