Trance

Tommy Sanders fumbled through the dark kitchen, opening and closing drawers as he went, trying to find a flashlight. A loud pearl of thunder shook the night outside as he closed his hand around the handle of the elusive light. Nervous laughter echoed from his friends in the other room. They had all heard that the power could be out for days but none of them had taken any precautions. Secretly, Tommy was excited about the storm; it had given him an excuse to ask Erica to come to his apartment.

Tommy flipped on the switch, sending an oval beam of light shooting from his hand like a powerful sorcerer. He walked out of the kitchen and found her with the light. Erica Dunn was sitting on the couch with her hands folded in her lap. A smile came across her face when she saw him carrying the flashlight but quickly faded as she threw her arm in front of her eyes to shield the glare.

He quickly apologized, aiming the light toward the floor.

Gregg Hartley said, “Smooth, man.”

Feeling his face turn red, Tommy hurried to the window and pulled back the blinds to see how much damage the storm had already done. Branches from trees littered the parking lot. The rain pounded on the window so hard he thought that it might shatter the glass.

“Maybe we should light some candles. I don’t think that flashlight is going to last all night,” Erica said, as she came up behind Tommy. With a hand on his shoulder, she peeked outside and shook her head in disbelief. The feel of her hand on his shoulder sent a shiver through Tommy’s body that he prayed she didn’t notice. With her being so close to him, he could smell the peach shampoo that she used that morning. He took a deep breath, savoring the scent of her.

“The flashlight might not be able to last all night, but I bet Tommy could,” Gregg said. He smiled and elbowed Tommy in the gut.

“I’ll l go find some candles,” Tommy replied, letting the blinds fall back into place as he shook his head. As he moved away, Erica’s hand slid from his shoulder, leaving it feeling empty.

Tommy went to the utility closet and pulled the door open. Shining the light, he found a box marked emergency and pulled it down. Covered with a layer of dust, he wiped it clean with the palm of his hand. Inside were the candles. He hefted the box up and carried it back to the living room. Erica met him at the table and helped him unload the box. They pulled out a half dozen candles and positioned them around the room. Tommy watched Erica light each candle. He loved how the flames made her blue eyes dance.

“We should do something spooky in this atmosphere,” Gregg said. “Why don’t you try and hypnotize one of us? You just were telling me about that book you bought on how to do it.”

“Oh hypnosis, I didn’t know that you were into that sort of stuff,” Erica said.
