CHAPTER ELEVEN

Garrett allowed me to get dressed for bed that night, while he waited outside the cabin. I tapped on the door when I was finished getting dressed and he self-conscientiously entered the room. The nightgown that had been purchased, along with my many gowns, was long and flowing, made of thin cream material. It was so much different than the long johns I had been sleeping in for so many months. I clutched my flowing wrapper around me, although I did not feel embarrassed to have Garrett see me. Hadn’t Rafe had an eye-full of me with me wearing less? Still, I sensed Garrett would have felt uncomfortable, being the gentleman he appeared to be. I had almost forgotten what it was like to actually feel like a woman, and Garrett was nothing like Rafe. He never looked at me with disdain as Rafe once had.

I could not wait outside the cabin, in my night things, while Garrett got dressed for bed, though, and he gave me a quick glance, before unbuttoning his shirt. “You would think they would furnish a screen,” he grumbled quietly.

“Don’t feel embarrassed on my account. Rafe used to parade naked in front of me all the time. I got used to it.”

“Is that what you expect me to do?” Garrett asked, giving me a long look. He was down to his nicely creased trousers, by then. “I keep feeling that you are constantly comparing me to Rafe. I know you love him, whether you want to admit it or not.”

“Just get on with it, and don’t pay attention to me,” I half laughed, as I turned my back. “We can muddle through this. I assure you. And the only difference I see between you and Rafe is that you are a gentleman and he isn’t. ”

“Is that so?” he asked. “I hate to disappoint you, but Just seeing you dressed like that makes my heart speed. Is that not disconcerting to you?”

“Do you plan to act on your excitement?” I asked, giving him a quizzical stare, over my shoulder. “You are the one who decided to book us as a married couple, rather than wait for another ship to sail.”

“What do you mean by that? I hadn’t intended it. It’s just the way it turned out. Now that the situation is upon us, I am not sure how I will manage sleeping next to you, for the next couple of months, without losing all rational thought of how to act in a lady’s presence.”

“Are you saying you don’t know what to do with a lady when she is sleeping next to you?” I laughed.

“You know exactly what I mean. You are merely taunting me. I believe Rafe has been a bad influence on you.” Then he smiled. “But I think I rather like it,” he admitted.

“Then stop worrying,” I said.

“Toss me my nightshirt,” he responded, nodding towards a chair where a white shirt lay over the back.

“You sleep in a nightshirt?” I questioned, trying to suppress a giggle.
