Master Plan

March 9th, 1989…

“Give me that back!” I yelled out to Hamisi. We were at a skating rink in Baltimore, Maryland. Hamisi took my slice of pizza and bit into it. The past three weeks have been a blast. Sammie was handling everything but I was the brain behind our operation. Hamisi was familiar with Sammie so he was cool with him dealing with the money drops. Hamisi thought Jared was going through family issues so he didn’t question not seeing him anymore. Maybe because the money was still coming in, not to mention, I was keeping Hamisi busy. We spent every day together and I stayed at his house almost every night. It felt good just sitting back and calling the shots. It was like Jared never existed.

“Come on, baby. Stop being stingy,” Hamisi said. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw two men by the concession stand. Matter of fact, they had been inside for a while just watching us. Maybe I was being paranoid because things were going too smoothly. Happiness didn’t last for too long.

“Ummm, can we go? I’m not feeling too good,” I said.

“You need to get dat checked out. Every day you go through these spells,” Hamisi said.

“I will eventually,” I replied.

“Need me to take you to a doctor or sumthin when we leave here?” he asked.

“I’m fine, trust me,” I said. He put the cheese pizza to my lips and I bit into it. All I did was eat, sleep, count money and spend time with Hamisi. I looked over to the concession stand and the two men were gone.

“You lookin’ for somebody?” Hamisi asked. I had a feeling the men were watching me instead of Hamisi because when I looked at them, their eyes were on me.

“No, I’m fine,” I said. “The Pleasure Principle” by Janet Jackson came on and I wanted to skate to it. Hamisi wasn’t a good skater so all he did was watch me.

“You should skate with me. Come on, it’ll be fun,” I said.

“Naw, I’d rather watch,” he replied.

I stepped out onto the rink wearing my pink skates with rhinestones. There was no way I was going to wear skates that everyone else had on their feet. The skates matched my pink racer jacket and my hair was brushed into a bushy ponytail that kept falling into my face. I twirled my hips and blew a kiss at Hamisi when I skated past him. Someone bumped into me and I went sailing onto the floor. Hamisi rushed over to help me up.

“Oh, my bad, Heart. I didn’t mean that,” Quinton said with a smirk on his face. That muthafucka was everywhere and it was starting to piss me off.

“You did it on purpose, bitch!” I said, getting up.

“What’s this? Another one of yah niggas? You ain’t shit but a slut!” Quinton yelled at me when he got in my face. Hamisi hit Quinton so hard he slid across the floor before he went falling on his ass.
