Chapter 13

The fast song the choir sang seemed to get all in his feet. Stanley wasn’t one to stand up during the choral selections, but he couldn’t help himself. Debbie had the entire church bumping in praise. It was hard not to mix his feelings for Debbie with his worship of the Lord. Both were a blessing, even if Debbie didn’t know it.

Pastor Roundtree’s message, based on Romans 12:18, about keeping peace so long as it was in your power was right on time, too. He was doing everything within his power to right wrongs. Thank You, Lord.

After service, Deacon Lewis approached Stanley. “Brother Brown, how are you?”

“I’m good. You?”

“Never been better.” He pulled Stanley to the side, out of the exiting flow of traffic. “I want you to know that I was able to get to the bottom of that situation last week. You were right. Someone did talk. We’ve taken disciplinary action. On behalf of the Deacon’s board, I do apologize. That’s not what we’re about.”

“Thank you. I appreciate you letting me know.”

“And we are still prayerfully considering you. We’ll let you know as soon as a decision is made.”

The men shook hands.

“Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you,” Stanley said.

Stanley was excited again about the possibility of becoming a deacon, a trusted leader in the church. He took a deep breath and, emboldened by this news, decided now was as good a time as any to let Debbie know that the church still believed in him, and maybe she should, too.

Without thinking too much about it, Stanley met Debbie at her car, which he remembered vividly from their last conversation. “Morning, Debbie.”

“Morning, Brother Brown,” she said dryly.

“Wondering if I could have a moment of your time.”

Debbie looked around nervously. “I already told you, you need to—”

“I heard you. You’re right. And I’m doing something about it,” Stanley said. He shoved his hands into his pockets to hide the fidgeting. He’d rarely been in this position, waiting for a woman to decide if he was worth her time. His relationships were usually the other way around.

“Are you really making an effort to reconnect with your children?”

“Yes, I am,” he stated. “But I still have to eat in between my efforts. I’d enjoy your company.”

A smile broke out on her face, and Stanley breathed again.

“Follow me,” Debbie said.

Stanley didn’t even ask where she was going because it didn’t matter. He’d follow that pretty face and sweet voice anywhere.

Stanley’s truck didn’t have as much get-up-and-go as Debbie’s vehicle. He lost her a few times on the freeway. She was probably slowing down so that he could keep up. Stanley recalled the time he had driven a brand new Corvette. It had belonged to his girlfriend at the time, a woman named Elvira. She was a high-up with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and was often called to travel to emergencies all over the country, which meant Stanley was left behind to manage her home and two dogs when she was gone.
