When, in the braised afternoons,

Thebes sprawls into a sleep of shaded rooms,

we do not fail in hope of you,

we do not forsake our vigilance

though our hearts have dried into hollow

forgotten nests. Abandoning

our washing, flowers, our crying child

in the sun behind the kitchen

we press our ears to the earth

to learn any news of you,

the rekindling of song,

your footsteps.
