Chapter 11

I blinked repeatedly at Olida until she laughed, then I found my composure and glared at her. “What’s so funny?”

“I’ve never seen you speechless before. I think I might write this moment down on the calendar.”

My hands twitched under the water, but I kept a handle on my actions, choosing to think first.

Olida started to speak again, but Mosi placed a hand on her shoulder. “For once, love, I think it might be better if I explain this.”

She glanced between me and Finn as he vibrated behind me. “I think you might be right.”

“So, what does she mean exactly?” Finn asked, leaning on the edge of the rocks as I turned to sit on my knees, still in the water, so I could see all of their faces.

“We learned that Lucinda gives a piece of her soul away every time she saves a life. Even if that life was never meant to be taken, there has to be a trade with this kind of magic. It was minuscule when she saved you and your sister, but with Maddox, it was more significant and the mother tree? Well, that could have killed her then if you hadn’t interfered.”

Fucking hell.

I knew there was a reason I’d never been a good person before. Good deeds never went unpunished.

“Are you saying my soul resides in Finn, Ivy, Maddox, and the mother tree?” I asked.

Finn growled next to me. Probably not a great idea for him to visualize any part of me being inside of his soon-to-be brother-in-law.

“Yes and no. A part of your soul was used to keep them on this side of the supernatural veil, but it’s only your essence that is left within the others. Well, all except the mother tree. She does own part of your soul now,” Mosi answered.

He said the words so casually, as if they weren’t a big freaking deal. “What does that mean? Can she control me?”

I hadn’t sensed any maliciousness from Maia when I’d been connected to her, but people weren’t born evil, either. With this new information, my guard would be up.

Mosi shook his head. “Not in the way you fear, Lucinda. You can speak to her through the trees, and she can provide you strength the same way, but she cannot influence your decisions.”

I remembered leaning against the tree when we’d fought Maeve and feeling better after using the trunk to help me back up. Interesting. I hadn’t thought much of it then. Either way, I still wasn’t overly fond of having my soul ripped away little by little.

“How many times can I save people before I kick the bucket?” I asked, and Finn flinched next to me.

Olida shook her head at my crassness while Mosi answered. “That can’t be answered, unfortunately. It depends on the severity of the situation. You wouldn’t be able to save another entity like the mother tree, but you might be able to help others another few dozen times if they’re comparable to Ivy and Finn.”

Fae lived centuries.
