Chapter 22: A Walk in the Park
As they entered the park, Mark said, âI noticed Jackson left. I suppose he went home to report on us.â
âProbably, but I suspect the main reason he left is that he thought with the two of you with me, I did not need two chaperones. I hope Mr. Darcy will stop being so worried about me and Miss Darcy in the coming year, particularly with Calabas along.â
As we walked along, I looked at Mark and decided I had to agree with Georgieâhe was handsome. I was puzzled as to why Georgie had not been very enthused about him when she reported on him after he called on her. He seemed to me to be a more alluring man than anyone I had met, including Lord Stonington. I had the sudden wish he had called on me instead of Georgie.
âSo, Miss Catherine, Miss Darcy says her life has improved greatly since you and Mrs. Darcy came into her life. May I assume Darcy and Miss Darcy have had the same effect on you?
âYou may, sir. I would say my life was not unhappy before I met them, but not particularly happy either. Now that I am living with them and Miss Darcy has become my twin sister, I cannot imagine being happier. It has been a dream come true.â
âMiss Darcy told me some of what Mrs. Darcy has been making the two of you study, and I was impressed. She says you are a quick learner and your musical abilities have improved considerably.â
âI believe I do learn more quickly than most, but I still have much to learn. I was woefully uneducated until I came to live with them. As for my musical abilities, I am merely adequate on the piano, but I do believe Elizabeth has helped me greatly with my singing. I am an alto and have not nearly the talent Elizabeth has, but I am getting better and hope to be a decent contralto someday.â
âYou should come over and sing with us,â said Cindy. âMark is a fantastic tenor, and Matthew is an adequate baritone. I am not sure what I am. I usually sing melody, but I cannot sing as high as good sopranos can sing. And I guarantee you, your voice, if you have had any training at all, is as good as mine and Matthewâs.â
âI would like that; thank you. When Miss Darcy is well, she can play the piano. I have never heard anyone play the piano as good as she does.â
âYes, we know, and she would be welcome.â
Suddenly Calabas stopped and growled. âOh, oh, that does not sound good,â said Mark.
âNo. He detects someone or some animal ahead of us.â I turned and waved Purvis up. âPurvis, Calabas has detected something ahead. I think you should go check.â
âAye, miss. Come Calabas; let us find what you smelled.â
Calabas and Purvis disappeared behind the shrubbery and they heard some crashing and yelling and then soon thereafter, Purvis and Calabas appeared again.
