CHAPTER 9

After parking in the hotel lot, Jay unloaded the car while Lark took her dogs to a patch of grass. Once they were done doing their business, she met Jay at the door. Dropping the doggie bags in the garbage, she followed him in. They hadn’t checked out of their rooms and still had their card keys, so they didn’t need to go to reception. Luke was in Jay’s room, waiting for them.

“Did you stay here all night?” Lark asked.

Without looking up, Luke shook his head, his hair flopped into his eyes. “Nope. Went home, came back. Found some stuff. Texted you pics.”

“Did you sleep at all?”

“Also nope. Went home, came back. Found some stuff. Texted you pics.”

“You already said that,” Lark told him.

“Yep. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.”

What an ass, Lark thought.

Jay huffed a laugh, and Luke finally looked at her.

“Oops.” She had said that out loud. She shrugged and smiled.

“Play stupid games, win stupid prizes,” Luke muttered and went back to his screen.

“Have you heard anything from Gordon and Greene?” Jay smoothly got them back on topic.

“Just the preliminary findings. Lark was right. The letters are legit. They were from her father written to her while he was locked up. They were all returned unopened?” His eyes met Lark’s once more in question.

“Yeah, they were unopened. I think I got a couple before I lived with my grandparents. My mom was usually too drunk to remember things like the mail. Or work. Or feeding her daughter.”

Well, she’d gone and made it awkward. Double oops.

Luke looked at her again. “All the letters were opened. So the question is, did your dad open them, or was it Lawson?”

She shrugged. “Dad already knew what was in them, so my guess is this Lawson guy.”

Jay looked up from his phone. “Kyle texted me that he’s been trying to track Lawson’s movements since the escape. So far, they have nothing. He’s like a ghost.”

“Nothing about his file has ever said anything about whether he’s a ghost or not, but I’ll assume he’s not.” Luke thought he was funny.

“Ha ha. Moving on. Lawson is of average intelligence. He never showed signs of masterminding anything, so either he has skills we don’t know about, more kills under his belt that we don’t know about, or he’s got help.”

Luke zeroed in on that. “You think he’s got a partner?”

Jay didn’t look like he liked that idea. “My gut says no. He might have killed more people than we can confirm, but I don’t think he shares well. There’s a control aspect here with him. I want to look into Lark’s dad’s death. The file never said who killed him?”

“No, the prison records showed a fight that day and several inmates were stabbed, but Seawell was the only fatality.”

“That doesn’t raise red flags to you?”

“On it.” After a few quick strokes of the keys, Luke said, “There’s nothing in the official file, but I have...unofficial files. I found a note by one of the guards who quit without notice before that fight.
