Chapter Twelve
Adrenaline spiked in Jackâs veins. Katlinâs scream registered at nearly the same moment as the gunshot. âRun!â He gripped her hand as they dashed across the parking area, darting between cars for cover, past stacks of abandoned railroad ties and derelict dinghies.
Katlin shrieked and ducked as a second shot rang out, covering her head with her free hand and stumbling on her heels.
âKeep moving!â Jack called. He understood her instinct to take cover, but the truth was that once the shot was heard, it was too late to get out of the way. All they could do was keep moving and hope his team got their backsides in gear.
Katlin rallied, matching his pace, despite the constricting dress and ice-pick heels.
Several yards away, a set of headlights flashed on, and the silhouette of a van peeled away from the other vehicles. Its engine growled as it sped toward them.
âYour team!â Katlin cried, relief and joy in her breathless tone.
A third shot exploded the window of a nearby car, staunching her joy and making her fumble over her feet. Katlin screamed once more, this time going down on one knee.
The damaged carâs alarm rang out, its lights flashing, and voices erupted behind them. Gamblers rushed from the building to see what was happening.
Jack scooped Katlin onto her feet when she didnât stand quickly. âAre you hurt?â She hadnât been shot. The bullet had hit a car several yards to the left.
âMy heel broke!â she seethed, her voice feral as the van tore past them in the night.
The tires squealed as his team changed directions, rocking wildly to avoid them.
Jack used the fob to unlock his truck doors, and Katlin dove inside. Jack joined her, gunning the engine to life as the sound of gunshots continued. Muzzle blasts lit the night as he wheeled the truck away from the sceneâhe hoped none of the gamblers or staff were injured in the cross fire.
Other vehicles quickly joined them in their escape, headlights bobbing and weaving in his rearview mirror.
Katlin rocked on the seat beside him, struggling with her seat belt and angling for a look behind them. âSomeoneâs firing on the van,â she cried. âEveryoneâs leaving the building. What if someoneâs hurt because of me?â
âMy priority is you.â Jack pressed the gas with more purpose, needing to put as much distance as possible between Katlin and the danger. His team could hold their own, and theyâd likely called the police at the first sight of the gun.
Seconds later sirens wailed in the distance, and Jack relaxed by a fraction. When the emergency crews and police cruisers tore past them, clearly on their way to the docks, he took his first deep breath of the night.
Katlin doubled over.
âHey.â He gripped her bicep, pulling her upright. âWhatâs wrong?â He scanned her small body for signs of blood or injury. âEverythingâs going to be okay. My guys are well-trained and the police will be there any minute.â
Katlin turned wide, tear-filled eyes on him. Her cheeks were scarlet, her lips quivering.
