Rodrigo settled into a seat on the private airplane. It was just past noon the day after the dinner party. They’d walked out of Giada’s apartment near midnight and had driven through the night to Genoa.

And in those five hours, seated beside his father while a chauffeur drove, Armani had told him everything.

Rodrigo now knew the exact size and scope of the Capello family business. He knew the names of the heads of every powerful family in Italy, which politicians, government, and law enforcement officials were on Armani’s payroll, as well as the major ports under their control, their primary money streams, and so much more.

When he got to talk to Giada, he’d tell her that her insane, heart-stopping plan had worked. He’d say that after he apologized for everything he’d done to her last night. The only reason he wasn’t half frantic with worry was knowing that she was tough, far tougher than she’d pretended to be at dinner, and that Casson was there with her.

It was near dawn by the time they arrived at his father’s house, and he’d had only a few hours to shower, change, and sleep before they boarded the plane to Croatia. As they talked last night, the one thing Armani hadn’t told him was exactly why they were going to Dubrovnik.

A flight attendant brought them coffees, a few newspapers, and a light lunch. Low on sleep, Rodrigo ignored the food and went for the coffee.

When Armani picked up a paper, he did the same.

“Are you curious?” Armani said from behind the newspaper.

“You’ll tell me when I need to know,” Rodrigo replied.

Armani chuckled. “Yes, but I know you. You’re my blood. You want to know.”

Rodrigo folded his paper. “I do.”

Armani set his own aside and took a sip of coffee. It was a short flight across the Adriatic, and the view out the small window was all deep blue water with barely visible fringes of land.

“Dubrovnik is home to my latest…venture.” Armani crossed his legs. “Tell me, did you really think Cosmin came up with the idea of creating and manufacturing a unique drug?”

Rodrigo’s heart stopped for just a moment, then slammed against the inside of his ribs. In that split second, he made the connections, understood that where they were going was the missing puzzle piece that would bring the bigger picture into focus.

“He didn’t have the intelligence,” Armani said coolly. “Or the ability to think long-term. The cartels are barbarians, stuck in a jungle.”

“If we…if we create and manufacture our own product, we won’t need to import,” Rodrigo said.

Armani grinned. “Yes. The sooner we can cut ties with them, the better. But that is only the beginning of what I have planned.”

“A super-soldier drug, like the Belgian woman was making?”

Armani waved that away. “No. Too hard to sell, and the results would, no matter how good, never satisfy the men who want war.”

Rodrigo had thought he’d done a good job manipulating the situation to ensure that Talya Maes was no longer on Capello’s radar, that his efforts plus the “problems” with the drug protected her.
