Cruz paced the parking lot away from the window of their motel room. Wind kicked up and rolled some trash across the asphalt. Only a few cars dotted the spots by the diner. Their vehicle was the only one by a motel room. Looked as if they were the only ones here.

He pulled out his phone to call one of his friends but shoved it back into his pocket. What was he going to say to Mason or Ryder? Ayla wants to screw, and I just turned her down. He could hear the laughing now.

He wanted to make love with her. It was never screwing. Not for him. He should insist they discuss their future and what tonight would mean if they still went their separate ways, but he was tired of the conversations that circled back to the same spot. Maybe two people who had been through an ordeal couldn’t get away from it. The tragedy would always hang over their heads like—dare he say it—storm clouds.

Her earthy smell still clung to him. Mixed with the scent of rain in the air, all he wanted to do was march back inside that room and make love to her all night. But if she walked out on him again, he wouldn’t be able to push the hurt away a second time.

Could he do what she asked and live in this moment? Could he put the future on hold and for once in his very planned life take a risk?
