Chapter 14

Benneck

I tapped my foot on the floor as I waited for the man to leave the bathroom. Not because I was being impatient for him to leave, but because of the nerves I had coursing through my veins.

When the man opened the door, I jumped. He raised an eyebrow at me and told me he was sorry. I apologized back to him then placed the wet floor sign outside of the bathroom.

I pulled the mop and bucket inside, soaked the mop, and began scrubbing the floor. That's right, I was cleaning the bathrooms at the training center. After being caught posing as a common citizen at the festival, I was in deep trouble. I could still feel the lashings on my back, although the burning had subsided quite significantly. I only hoped I wouldn't have any scars from it. Only hardened criminals bear the scars of a royal whipping. After the whipping was over, my father told me that I was being temporarily downgraded from Royal officer to the Trials sanitation services. That basically meant I would be cleaning the training center.

At first, this news was somewhat of a relief because I was going to be able to get away from the castle; that was until I heard the name and saw the face of the competitor from Scales.

Livelyn Marie Jewels. The girl from Guntheria Days who instantly caught my eye. The Trials of the Crowned Sisterhood was the last place I wanted to see someone who I liked. She would either be dead or be my mother's sister queen and my stepmother.

I had been daydreaming about finding her in Scales, swooping her up, and running away with her, but that would never happen now.

I shoved the mop and bucket out of the bathroom and the door closed behind me. When I lifted my head, I noticed someone standing there, staring at me. I smiled when I noticed who it was.

She pointed at me. "You're the guy from Guntheria Days, right?"

She was able to recognize me because I brought the wig with me as soon as I saw the announcement of Liv being the competitor. I asked my supervisor to put Benny on my name tag instead of Benneck. He didn't ask me about the wig. It wasn't abnormal for people to wear wigs, especially those with hair like mine that is hard to tame. If he had, I would have just been honest with him and told him that I was trying to blend in with the crowd.

"Yes, Benny. And you're Livelyn," I said.

"Good memory. I didn't know you worked here."

"I just started working here. I was working at the castle before, but I was transferred over here." Technically, that wasn't a lie.

She half-smiled, but it seemed very forced because her eyes dropped with sadness.

"I thought you lived in Golden Falls," she said.

"Oh." Whoops. "I do, but I travel to Panarama for work."

"That's a long commute."

"Work at the castle is worth it."

"Good point. Well, it was nice to see you.
