Maya’s muscles went weak. She tried to get words out, staring into Ryan’s ocean-blue eyes, but she couldn’t. Frozen in time, she wasn’t sure how to react. Flashbacks of the crash, the island, the bodies… everything came back to her at once. Everything she had tried to bury and forget resurfaced. A surge of feelings stirred inside her—anger, hurt, pain, happiness, sadness, all mixed with shock.

Not knowing how to respond or what to say, autopilot mode took over her body and mouth. She looked down at her laptop. “Good morning, Mr. Newman. My name is Maya, and I am the purser on the flight. I would like to welcome you back. We have Ivana and Magda to help you—”

“Maya,” Ryan said, cutting her off.

A chill ran through her body, hearing her name escape his lips. He stood in front of her. She felt tears forming, and she quickly blinked them back.

Ryan took a step toward her, closing the gap between them.

“Maya… Maya,” Ivana called from behind. “The captain called to arm the doors.”

Maya turned and walked away from Ryan toward the galley. She couldn’t deal with him. She didn’t want to. She’d already had a rough time recovering from all the losses she’d faced. The last thing she wanted was the past to return in the form of Ryan, looking gorgeous, sitting in suite two-K. She knew there was no way to avoid him. At some point, she was going to have to serve him, as she’d be alone in first class while the other two girls were on break. Not wanting to think about it, she felt a headache coming on.

After confirming all doors were locked, she played the safety video. She answered the calls from the supervisors in business and economy class and confirmed their cabins were secure. Then she passed the checks to the flight deck by pressing the code on the interphone. Sitting on the jump seat, ready for takeoff, she looked at the ring finger on her left hand, which was now bare. A painful stab pricked her heart.

“Cabin crew prepare for take-off,” said the captain over the PA.

A twinge of anxiety made her insides palpitate. Every time she heard those words, the feelings associated never went away. Her awareness of her environment had increased since the crash, and she took her training more seriously than ever before. With Ryan onboard now, memories of the past rushed back to her, along with anxiety and unease, which followed without cause.

Seconds later, the aircraft surged ahead for take-off, and soon the golden rays of the morning sun shone on the skyline of Dubai, glittering everything it touched with the lift-off.

Once the seatbelt sign was turned off, Maya stood and changed her shoes. She put on her waistcoat and decided to remain busy in other cabins to avoid Ryan. She had nothing to talk to him about, and if she did run into him, she would keep the conversation civil, just like a professional. Civil, Maya, civil!
