Chapter 12

Lucifer attended my party, as I knew he would. He wouldn’t miss a good party, and he’d understand my silent invitation for him to come. I felt his presence, an annoying rub against my senses. None of us enjoyed having another power in our Court. We could handle it, but the power friction felt like walking around with an itch you could never scratch.

Since I couldn’t pinpoint his location in the gardens, and since he could be anyone, I kept Nevaeh close, perhaps closer than ever before, especially now that his presence triggered some of her memories of the Before. Spain no longer existed. Sangria was just sweet wine.

Those who remembered had to die, or Lucifer would take them, often pitting them against what they held dearest just to see if he could. A single slip, the name of the drink or country, didn’t count as remembering. Flickers of memories were fine as long as she didn’t remember more, but I had a bad feeling she did. For the mortals accessible to Lucifer, memories presented as dreams. Nevaeh would sleep with me tonight. I had to know.

Finding Cayen in the garden, I nodded, telling him I would retreat for the night. I took Nevaeh’s hand and led her inside the House, down the steps, and back to the entry hall, where a man standing over the bath being filled caught my eye. He looked up, smiled, and tipped his tall hat. I’d recognize that smile anywhere. “I’m surprised you didn’t make a grand entrance,” I projected into Lucifer’s mind.

“I was too busy admiring your vile creations.”

“Behave yourself.”

His chuckle reverberated against my chest, and I closed off my mind before I walked through the waterfall. I led Nevaeh to the bed, where I removed her pretty dress and stepped back to admire her beauty. I slipped off my clothes so she could do the same. Her gaze immediately dropped between my legs.

“You may approach,” I said.

She did and took me into her soft hand, stroking me as if I needed stroking to get the blood pumping and stay erect. I could and would stay this way for the duration of the night. That would surely please her. I dropped my defenses, curbed my power inwardly, let it burn me instead of those around me, and closed my eyes to enjoy the moment and not feel how her body responded to mine. I just wanted to feel what it was like to share pleasure with a mortal whose soul belonged to me.

Nevaeh dropped to her knees and took me into her mouth. Soft and warm, she suckled me, her wet mouth feeling glorious against my skin. I stroked her hollowed cheeks, fisted her curls, and moved her head, sometimes stopping her movements to block her airway until tears stained her pretty face. This aroused me more.

I wiped her tears with my thumbs, then pulled her up, threw her on the bed, flipped her over, and grabbed the back of her neck. I licked from the base of her spine to my hand, tasting myself all over her.
