PSYCHIATRIST

Outside of your school, you and your guardian or surviving parent might want to help you navigate your grief by having you see a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is an educationally trained professional who you can talk to like a psychologist or school counselor, but they are the only one who can legally and ethically prescribe medication if they and your guardian or surviving parent think it is in your best interest. They require payment, and again you can see them weekly, biweekly, or monthly. They are also considered a safe adult to talk to.

If you have never seen a counselor before, it’s understandable if you are a little nervous or scared to do so for your first time, especially if one of your friends shared their not so happy experience with you. Again, every person seeing a counselor is different and has different needs and every counselor is different. You’re only going to know what it’s like when you experience it yourself. The key to counseling is to be open and honest with how you’re feeling and to communicate if something is making you uncomfortable.
