How did it feel? Scary? Overwhelming? If it was a lot to take in, try it again. Repeat the intentions above until you can really sit with them, feeling what they mean for you and what kinds of reactions they evoke in your body. Especially pay attention to the sensations that you feel in your chest and the rate of your breathing. Do you feel dampness on your brow or in your palms? It’s totally fine if you do. Just pay attention to it without judgment. If, after a while, you can hold these intentions in your mind, you can move on to the following even more radical declarations of acceptance.

“I welcome these bad thoughts with an open mind.”

“Thank you, mind, for that horrifying thought.”

“I can think that thought—and a lot worse, too—without being harmed or harming others. These are just thoughts that I’m having. They have no power over me.”

“Come on, bad thought—come and stay awhile!”
