i It is listed in the achieves as being likely recorded in January 1824; however, it was almost certainly taken down in January 1823, when Knopwood interviewed and recorded Pearceâs account in the Hobart gaol on being recaptured.
ii The author encourages those interested in the details of the escape and the possible escape routes taken along with the conflicting narratives and a systematic critical assessment of these contradictions to read Dan Sprodâs 1977 definitive study: Alexander Pearce of Macquarie Harbour: Convict â Bushranger â Cannibal.
iii In the Knopwoodâs account, Pearce claims that at this point he and Greenhill made multiple raids against Aboriginal camps, killing, and injuring a number of men in order to obtain food from camp fires along this part of their journey. This is not repeated in other accounts provided by Pearce, and given they were just two and in very poor physical condition, it is considered unlikely â though parts of the story cannot be totally dismissed.
