Chapter Sixteen
“Kash, get yer ass over here,” Westland called from the bubble Tuesday morning.
I walked over. “What’s up?”
“Ives has a visit. Tell him to get ready then take him up there.”
I nodded, went to Ives’ cell and knocked on his window. He wore the standard T-shirt and boxers.
“Get dressed, you got a visit,” I told him.
“A visit? Who is it?”
“They don’t tell me, Ives. Guess you’ll see when you get there.”
He brushed his teeth and washed his face, changed into fresh pairs of boxers and socks and pulled on the orange jumpsuit. A female CO named Fritz was my partner. She was an older woman with a scratchy voice that came with smoking for more than two decades. She was quiet, did her job and didn’t try to piss off the inmates like so many other guards.
Many people assumed there wouldn’t be women Correctional Officers at a maximum security prison because the inmates would always be flashing their junk. It happened, but not on a daily basis. Most inmates learnt right away that jacking off in front of a CO, male or female, could get them in trouble. I loved it when an inmate thought he would impress a woman with the size of his cock and instead of swooning she threw out a comment like, ‘Do they make those in an adult size?’
The walk from Unit two to the main building and the visiting room wasn’t a very long one.
“You have no idea who could be coming?” I asked.
He shook his head. “I told Greg and April not to worry about me. I didn’t want them writing me or visiting me.”
“Whoever it is, I’m sure it’ll be a good thing.”
It wasn’t like in the movies where all inmate and visitor contact was behind glass. Only the truly dangerous inmates had to have a non-contact visits, with glass between them and their visitors. Most inmates were allowed in the visiting room unrestrained. I didn’t know of any incident or fight happening in there. Apparently there was honour among thieves because there was an unspoken rule that no one caused a disturbance in visiting. Not even arch enemies would take a shot at each other.
Before going into the visiting room, inmates were placed in a cell in the visiting holding area where they were strip searched. It was usually done by the visiting officer, but not always. Inmates were often strip searched more than once when they left their cell—just another example of a redundancy that kept dangerous incidents at a minimum.
When we stepped into the holding area, Stank, the visiting officer, escorted an inmate into the main area.
“I’m slammed, Kash,” he said. “Can you strip him and bring him out?”
“Can do,” I replied.
“Thanks,” Stank replied.
“I’ll meet you back at the unit, Fritz.”
She nodded and left. For obvious reasons, women officers weren’t allowed to strip search inmates.
I put Ives in the cell. “Get naked.”
He winked at me and whispered, “Bet you hate this part of the job.”
I chuckled. “Most of what I see ain’t worth seeing.
