Dominic catches me when I look at my phone.

‘You’re coming, right?’

The only person who knows that I’ve arranged for Caleb and me to go away together is Lydia, so there is no way Dominic can be aware. Even Caleb has no idea that there is a flight with his name on it, leaving tomorrow.

‘All things being equal…’

‘I’m turning up tomorrow morning at ten and dragging you out. It’s getting late and I know Matthew’s running an errand, so I’ll drop you at home. My car is downstairs.’

It’s later than I think and everyone left the office hours ago. I pack up as Dominic slings his messenger bag over his shoulder and helps me with my weekend box file. I flip my phone over to hide the screen, a little too quickly. Dominic pauses, scrutinises my face and picks the box up.

‘I’m not ready to give up trying to work you out, but I’m letting this one slide.’ He smiles kindly as he leads the way out of the Ivory Bow office. He manages to keep his promise to let it go, until he puts the box down in my home office and is about to leave.

‘Can I borrow your phone real quick?’ he asks, patting his front and back pockets.

‘Sure.’ I hand it over. When I realise what Dominic has done, it’s too late.

‘Firstly, stop handing your phone over to everyone who asks. Secondly, put a passcode on your phone. Most importantly, why is this alert reminding you to check in to a flight to Bangkok?’ He shows me the notification I’ve been trying to hide.

‘Hey! That’s sneaky.’ I grab my phone from him.

‘Unbelievable. You were going to quietly jump on a plane?’

‘No. Not any more. I booked the flight weeks ago and was hoping I could make the trip work, but it’s not going to happen. I’ll be here tomorrow. I just need to move the flight.’

Dominic studies my face before sighing with resignation.

‘Would you rather go to Bangkok?’

Yes. With Caleb, even though he is being awful and has a girlfriend; because I have somehow become a glutton for punishment and one of those terrible people that tries to move in on someone else’s boyfriend. And no, I don’t recognise myself either.

‘Bangkok can wait. I’ll move it.’

‘Don’t look so sad. It’ll be fun taking you out in the boat. You can get some sun, we can stuff our faces with ice cream, drink too much and eat what we caught.’

‘Yeah.’ I force a smile.

Dominic smiles exaggeratedly at me, showing all his teeth. I know it will be fun. He’s solely responsible for my now extensive street hawker and dive bar knowledge of the city.

‘I’m hungry,’ he announces suddenly. He marches into the kitchen, opens the fridge and starts taking out the platters Ms Pat has prepared for me.

‘Aren’t you going out on a date tonight? Buy her dinner.’ I walk over and start putting back the salads and meats he took out of the fridge.

‘Shit. What’s the time?’

‘Nine thirty. You have half an hour.
