CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
“How did a hike to a swimming hole turn into a full-blown gathering?” Karmen asks while walking on the trail side by side with him. She’s carrying Nadia in her backpack-style carrier.
“We have a lot of people always coming and going,” he answers.
“Was it always like that before?” Karmen asks.
“Nah. We weren’t here much and when we were, it was only a few days at a time.”
He’s carrying his own backpack, plus Karmen’s, and the baby’s bag. The boys are running excitedly up ahead. Nick, who is carrying another large backpack, walks with Nic and Nat, who are in their swimming clothes and are excited to finally get to swim in actual running water versus a pool.
Sasha and Emma showed up at the house right on time and followed the line of trucks in their own cars while Jake and Eric rode along in Nick’s and are currently carrying camp chairs and rolling a cooler with them. Jesse and Lindsey were also invited by Ethan on this hike so Jesse can finally meet Lindsey’s son, who is now walking and chatting with Nic.
He spots an opening not far up ahead. The boys dart through it and he points it out to Karmen. “Guess the boys just found their mama,” he says.
“Thank God! I’m too out of shape for this,” Karmen retorts.
“This can’t be any worse than walking around the bar four to five hours a day.”
“You’re probably right.” She laughs and Nadia giggles along just because. “Frankie’s getting stronger, you know.”
“I hope,” he says. Unless she’s fooling everyone.
They walk into the opening and the kids all run by them, joining the dogs that are playing in the water not too far from shore. He sets his bags next to Frankie’s and Karmen hands Nadia over to him in exchange for her bag. She opens it and pulls out large beach towels, laying one down for the baby to sit on.
“Here, I’ll get her changed so she can get in the water with her dad,” Karmen says.
He looks out on the river and sees Lucas waving at them. They’re floating on two flamingos and a donut that all seem to be tied together. He can see his girl’s legs hanging over the side of one of the flamingos. He unpacks his bag for a bottle of water and a towel, throwing it on top of Frankie’s stuff. Jake is already shirtless and heading to the water in his swimming trunks.
“Hey, Karmen, I got her. You can change if you need,” Sasha says. She and Emma are both sitting next to Karmen, and Sasha takes Nadia. Karmen stands up and unbuttons her shirt, slipping out of her shorts before taking the shirt off. Her bathing suit is already underneath.
Nick whistles at her and Karmen throws her shirt over to him, where he catches it and sniffs it. “You are one hot effing mama!” his brother says to his wife before he walks over and pulls her into his arms, giving her a shameless kiss.
