Chapter 20
âJemma?â A hand shook Jemmaâs shoulder. âYou need to wake up. Abeâs here.â
âAbeâs where?â Jemma mumbled.
âIn the kitchen, waiting to take you home.â
Jemma tried to focus on the blurry face above her, but keeping her eyelids open was too much work. She let them close. âIâm not . . . going home until the end of August.â
âNot home to Indiana. Home to Abeâs house.â
âIâm . . . here . . . now.â
âJemma.â A hand jiggled her shoulder again. âYouâre not at Abeâs. Do you know where you are?â
Blearily, Jemma checked her surroundings. Not her bedroom.
âDo you know who I am?â The voice was quiet but knife-sharp, and Jemma wondered vaguely how sheâd upset her questioner.
Her questioner. âYouâre Wendy.â
âGood.â Wendy sounded relieved. âYouâre in my guest room. Do you remember that now?â
âOkay.â
âJemma, do you remember what happened last night? Why you stayed here?â
Wendyâs guest room. Why had . . . ? âUm . . .â
âCooper Shaw. You found him. Do you remember?â
Cooper. Cooper in the rosebushes. âYes.â Jemma squirmed, trying to sit, but she couldnât do it without Wendyâs help.
âAbeâs here,â Wendy repeated.
âDoes he . . . need to . . . question me?â Jemmaâs body tilted backward.
Wendy put a hand between Jemmaâs shoulder blades, bracing her. âHe needs to take you home. I need to go to work.â
âOkay. What did I . . . do with . . . my clothes?â
âDonât worry about getting dressed now. Go collapse in your own bed. Abe said he already called your work to tell them youâre not coming in.â
âThat was nice of him.â Jemma plucked at the front of the flowery red pajamas she wore. âI need to give you your pajamas back.â
âDo it later. No rush.â Wendy leaned to whisper in her ear. âI went to the drop and left your note.â She held a folded piece of paper out to Jemma. âHereâs your note from Rowan. Iâll tell you straight out that I read it. I read your note too. Payment for my delivery services.â
Too groggy to care what Wendy had read, Jemma unfolded the note.
Dearest Jemma,
Thanks again for saving my life. I owe you everything. Cooper says heâs found a way to get a chunk of cashâseveral thousand dollars. Itâs a legit way, so donât worry. Heâs trying to talk me into leaving the state, and after the near miss tonight, Iâm considering it. Maybe I should give things time to calm down in Ohneka. Can we talk about it? If you get this note in time and can slip away, meet me here between 4 AM and sunrise. Iâll wait for you. If you canât make that meeting, then meet me here Tuesday night at midnight. I love you forever.
Rowan.
âI guess I missed this morningâs meeting,â Jemma said.
âI could have made it. I picked up the note not long before four, but Iâm not who he wanted to see.â
âWendy . . . thank you.â It would have been so easy for Wendy to tell Detective Turner exactly where to find Rowan.
