“Look who I found. Still can’t remember the last time she drove all the way out here to see us,” Serenity’s aunt Jackie cheered, pausing for a moment to pull Serenity into her arms.

“Auntie,” Serenity’s voice came out in a childlike giggle-whine as her aunt kissed her forehead.

“Don’t auntie me,” she fussed. “Where have you been?”

Serenity blushed slightly confirming what Jackal had told her in passing. “I’ve been around. Working and-”

“Getting to know that big boy, I told your mother you two were going to end up together, I told her it was going to happen one way or another,” Jackie said, stopping at the kitchen counter as she passed through the house. “Want a drink?”

“No, ma’am, I’m good,” Serenity said with a laugh.

Jackie chuckled and grabbed her glass. “That’s because you’ve been drinkin’ that milk. Skin glowing. Mmhmm. I see you.”

Serenity shook her head and held the tin closer to her body. “I haven’t been drinkin’ anything. Thank you.”

Jackie stopped in her tracks and looked at Serenity with confused eyes. “Say what now? All that man you got and you ain’t giving him the gawk gawk 5000?”

Serenity’s cheeks flushed.

“Jacqueline,” Jackal’s deep voice bellowed his wife’s name, making her abort her next line of questioning. “I’m going to pretend I never heard that. Baby girl… you alright?”

Serenity looked over her shoulder at her uncle. He reminded her so much of her mother. Marissa and Jackal shared the same smile, scowl, and full eyes. Serenity had everything else of her mother’s but was given the eyes of her father.

Serenity looked back at her aunt and Jackie quickly got the hint. “I have a card game with my ladies before Omar comes home from school. Serenity, when you want to talk, I’m here. As always. You never have to navigate anything alone.”

“Thanks, auntie,” Serenity replied, before turning around to face Jackal completely. She waited until Jackie was completely gone before pulling the tin away from her chest. “I couldn’t sleep last night, and I found this in the closet…”

Jackal studied the tin and clenched his jaw. “Follow me.”

Jackal started toward his home office as Serenity stalked behind him. Never did he want his niece or nephew to know the life he and his sister escaped from. Or the life his brother was still trapped in – seemingly a willing participant to the brutal chaos of the Suarez Cartel. When tucked into his space, she sat on the couch and handed him the tin. Jackal sat next to her and took it from her grasp.

“What if I told you that your mother had a very hard life before she came over here with me?” Jackal started pulling the top of the tin open. “Valentina is our youngest sister. Your mother. When she got here, we changed her name to Marissa.”

Jackal chuckled. “Your father was supposed to watch her for me while I did a bid and when I came back home, they were married, had a son and you were on the way. Sounds familiar hmm?”

Serenity laughed lightly.
