Chapter 19

“Sorry, man, she can’t go home yet. But he’s been spotted once.”

Gideon grimaced at his cell phone as if the bad news that Webber was still at large was the device’s fault. “Where?”

“Gas station downtown, near the Corner Pocket,” Detective Benitez said.

Gideon mentally placed the popular bar and billiard hall. He’d not been in there in a long time, but he was aware of it, being as it was run by an ex-con. Insider trading didn’t usually even skirt the edges of his work, unless it was a parent being sent off, so he’d simply filed it away as part of knowing his turf.

And it was nowhere near either here or Sophia’s place. And a good twenty miles in the opposite direction from his own home.

“Gassing up?” he asked.

“Yeah, and went inside for some food. Patrol got the call, but he was gone by the time they got there. We pulled the surveillance video and saw he’d talked to the clerk a bit more than if he’d been just paying, so I went to talk to him. He said the guy was mouthing off about who kept him away from his injured son because his bitch of a wife was lying about him, as usual.”

Gideon went still. Did the guy mean the security guard he’d then overpowered? Or...him?

“Wait,” Benitez said when Gideon asked, “do you mean you actually had physical contact with this guy? The report only said you were there and intervened.”

Gideon explained exactly what had happened in Charlie’s hospital room.

“Good for you,” Benitez said. “But that means he could have meant either one of you. In fact, it sounds like he probably meant you, since the rent-a-cop didn’t do such a great job of keeping him anywhere.”

“Did he say anything else?”

“Not about that. We got his direction of travel when he left the station, but he could have gone anywhere after that. But I’ll go talk to the clerk again. Now that I know you had an actual altercation with him, maybe something else will click.”

“Any idea how he found the townhome?”

“Actually, yes. The officer who was there took it very seriously and went through some street cam footage. On her own time, I might add. She came up with what looks like Webber checking out the neighborhood, including the doctor’s house, about three weeks ago. Then a week later, it showed him walking by within minutes of her arriving there, I’d guess coming home after work.”

Three weeks. Right after Ellen had taken Charlie to Sophia. But long before Sophia would have been aware there was a potential problem, so that she might not even notice someone following her.

And her name was on the mailbox. Was Webber that out of control, that he’d walk every street near the hospital looking for her name, then follow her to confirm, just to know where the woman who had dared to help his son lived?

Of course he is.

“Thank Officer Fulton for me,” Gideon said. “That was above and beyond, and I appreciate it.
