He was asleep—of course—by the time I reached our room. The lights off and his back facing my bed. I had a brief moment of panic, my mind trying to ascribe meaning to that position.

Had he regretted it, last night? Us? Did he want to shut me out? Even in the depths of his unconscious, did he not want to see me? Me to see him? Me to wrap myself around him and keep him warm? I’d stay away, if he asked. Anything to keep him safe.

I bit the inside of my mouth. I never had been sensible about overthinking. If I had spent less time worrying about what he thought of me, I might have been able to put together who he was. Who he wasn’t. If he’d ever have told me. If he thought it was better a liar than a suicide. Than a strange and pitiable man.

Who cries for the suicides?
