CHAPTER 20

Time passed. Christmas came and New Year’s followed right behind. Elly made her deadline, fingering the French officer who had turned traitor. She was then given the mission of finding where a specific French officer was hiding the money he’d made from selling the designs of the new French tanks to the Germans. The Deuxième Bureau wanted to make sure the money filled their coffers before arresting the man. Josephine continued to perform show after show for the French and British troops while Elly allowed herself to be wined and dined by the French officer until he fed her one small tidbit that led to a raid on a great-aunt’s home in the suburbs of Lyon.

When Elly wasn’t listening in on conversations or starting her own, she was walking the streets of Paris hand-in-hand with Grant as he tested her French and her memory. Every Saturday they went to a matinee but not before playing an elaborate game of who could trail the other without being spotted. They dined on Thursday evenings at different restaurants where Elly had to be able to describe the layout and everyone who filled the space all the way down to the waitstaff who brought them their drinks.

And then flowers began to bud again. Trees grew leaves. The chill of the air was chased off by the warmth of the sun. And Germany invaded Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg … and France.

“This has all happened before,” Madame explained to Elly and Claire over breakfast. They were sitting at the kitchen table with Elly nibbling on a sweet roll and drinking a cup of coffee while Claire very intently buttered and jammed the piece of toast in her hand. Madame was holding up the latest newspaper. “In the Great War it looked like we were losing but then there was Clermont-Ferrand and the Germans got no further.”

Elly’s eyes narrowed on her cup. The very fact that this had happened before should have been the first clue that the Germans wouldn’t let it happen again. That she was now in a country that was currently being invaded made her break out in cold sweats at the most random moments of the day. But she said nothing. Madame wasn’t leaving this apartment. She was born here. She’d die here.

“Well,” Elly said after a minute. “I need to go. I’m sure the others are probably already at the church.”

“L’Église de la Sainte-Trinité?” Madame asked.

“Yes, that’s where the Red Cross has set up.” Elly, along with Jo, had started volunteering with the Red Cross as refugees began pouring over the border. The church had been commandeered by the organization and was now a feeding center for those in need. It was also a place German spies might be infiltrating. Grant had told Elly the other day that the Germans were using different ones on the ground to see the war from their enemies’ eyes. Jo and Elly were to keep an eye out for men who looked to be fit, hearty, and hale and more importantly not at the front lines but trying to hide behind women and children.
