Chapter Nine

Sunlight streamed into the bedroom through the open curtains. Harley frowned and pulled the covers up over her head. The movement caused her shoulder ache, but she ignored it and snuggled deeper under the covers.

She rolled over onto her side. A small moan escaped her lips.

Her frown deepened.

She was sore in places she had never been sore before and it wasn’t just her shoulder. Memories flooded her brain. Scott claimed he wanted her when he made love to her. He really wanted her.

A smile spread across her face as her hand reached across the bed. “Scott?” She dug her way out from under the covers and stared at the empty side of the bed. The indent in the pillow and twisted sheets told her he had slept there. She touched the pillow. It was cold.

The smile on her face slowly faded. “Scott!” she called out. The dead silence she had grown accustomed to, echoed through the room.

She bit her bottom lip.

It was obvious he had left hours ago.

Why would he leave without waking me?

There had to be a reasonable explanation.

Harley scooted to the edge of the bed. The towel she had wrapped around herself was on the floor, but Scott’s clothes weren’t there. She got up and walked over to the window. His truck was gone.

Her chest ached.

She turned and walked to the bathroom and turned on the water in the shower. Harley stared at her reflection in the mirror. A bit mark on her left shoulder stared back at her. It was already healing, but it would leave a scar. She gently touched it and winced. It was sore.

“He bit me!” Harley closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She let it out and opened her eyes. The bite mark was still there. Her heart sped up. She knew what the mark meant. Her grandpa had told her a male shifter bit his mate as a way of showing she belonged to him. Harley was as good as married to Scott, except there was no divorce.

This was a mating bite.

She had seen them before on Crystal Anderson and Tara Anderson, but she had never said anything, not even to Joy. Her grandpa told her it was a secret she could not tell anyone, unless she found her mate.

Tears filled her eyes. “He had better have a really good excuse for leaving me alone, because if he doesn’t, I’m going to beat his ass with the biggest stick I can find.” Harley stepped into the shower. The hot water felt good even though it made the bite sting a little. Harley leaned against the wall, letting the hot water pound her back.

The tears rolled down her cheeks. She couldn’t stop them. She felt shaky. Old doubts slipped into her mind. She was different from others—not completely human nor completely shifter. Was that the reason Scott had avoided her all those years?

The shower door opened and someone stepped into the shower with her. Before what was happening fully registered
