We walked through hallways that had been familiar and safe to me hours before but were now foreign and dangerous. I glanced at faces I had seen for years. Suddenly, I was unsure if they were friends or foes. Was that new soldier a human or a Morr-ta in disguise? Was that fresh transfer a secret agent for the exiled Vanyi?

“How did you find me?“ Axika asked as we got onto a lift to head back towards the main part of the station.

There was no simple answer to this question. I cast him a slightly guilty look. “I literally hacked into your communicator,“ I began with a grimace. “I know, I know. It’s a violation of station regulations and rules to track an officer, but the circumstances were extenuating. I saw where your signal cut off and figured it had been disabled somehow. So, I bypassed the locator and followed a pulse let off by the device itself. I then cross-referenced that with a check of all quadrants that temporarily went offline or were locked down. The ventilation system was the only one that went offline and shut down right after your communicator cut off. Then I found an entrance to the vent system that was closest to your last signal.“ I thought I would have lost him by now, but a glance over at him showed he was listening with rapt attention. “After that, it was a matter of checking every shaft. I was hoping to find you before the fans kicked on.“ I blew out a hard breath and shook my head. “I can give you a full report if you wish. It just boiled down to detective work.“

He looked at me with one eyebrow raised. “Detective work?“

“Yeah.“ I waved my hand in a circle. “Do you know detective work? Like those old movies. I guess you haven’t seen them,“ I murmured. “So, in the good ones, Sherlock Holmes is a detective who is hired to solve a mystery. He and Watson—his partner—have to go out and find clues, and at the end, he puts them together in some diabolical way and solves the mystery.“ I shrugged. “I’m lucky I have high security clearance or I would never have been able to track you and check the offline sectors. Obviously, this wasn’t a Sherlock Holmes mystery, but the concept is the same.“ Now I felt a little silly, but I did feel like a master detective for a while back there. When I found him, I wanted to whoop for joy that my methods had worked. And that I’d found him alive. I had not estimated good odds that I would find the new station admiral among the living.

Axika crossed his arms. “Brilliant.”

“Why, thank you, Admiral.“

“Back to this, are we?” He rolled his eyes to the ceiling. “For the love of Trall, I thought you liked calling me Ax.“

I bit my lip to keep from grinning. I had only called him Admiral to be playful, but my thoughts sobered at the thought of what others might think of my pet name for the station admiral.
