Chapter 11 — Olivia

What a strange day, Olivia thought blankly, in the frozen few seconds that elapsed after she’d kissed Damien full on the lips. That morning, she’d felt mostly irritation for him—frustration and scorn at the way he’d been at the bar last night, the things he’d said about his conquests, his clearly terrible attitude to women. But then, somehow, it had all changed. The way he’d opened up to her, told her about what he was doing there to make up for the fact that she’d had to reveal her own reasons… it was like talking to a completely different person to the arrogant jerk from last night. And then, fighting alongside him, seeing how brave he was, how well he fought, even in a body he was barely familiar with. And how gentle he’d been with the old couple, how carefully he’d taken care of them, tending the old man’s wounds and making sure Viola was looked after. It had gotten to her, she had to admit. He was incredibly attractive on a physical level, she knew that. That was easy enough to handle. But she couldn’t handle it if he was also kind, and sweet, and caring—

The kiss had been a stupid impulse, she knew that. Reckless. Sure, a part of her had wanted to kiss him basically since they’d met. But that part of her was an idiot and had been voted down in every mental council meeting she’d run about the blue-eyed Californian dragon she’d run into on the beach. But he’d just looked so… forlorn. As much as she hated his arrogance, it was somehow much, much worse to see him looking so lost, so confused, so clearly taken aback by what he’d learned about his family. He was learning so many hard lessons these days. She wanted to take his mind off it.

And, if she was truly honest, her whole body wanted him so badly she was probably going to explode if she didn’t get to touch him at least once.

The kiss had been short—he’d broken away from her almost immediately, a look of such complete surprise in his pale blue eyes that she would have laughed if she wasn’t so busy trying to keep control of her breathing. Her hands were still on his face, where she’d taken hold of him to pull him into a kiss, and for the life of her, she had no idea what to say.

Damien cleared his throat. “Um,” he offered, and there was a look in his eyes, under the confusion—a look of such naked desire that she felt her whole body tense up in response. Well, at least she wasn’t completely off base with thinking that this guy wanted her. But where else did that leave them? Impossible to think about it. It had been such a long day, and she was so worn out, and there were so many questions to deal with, so much uncertainty in the future… but what wasn’t uncertain
