Chapter Four

A few weeks later

Approaching an alien and potentially hostile planet was not easy, and overall not very wise. Alistair usually never did such things himself. He had staff who dealt with difficult tasks, and three quarters of the time, he was bound to Earth through duties related to Gaia Industries.

There was a more important duty carrying him to Hachtera, though, one to the son who didn't trust him, who didn't know he was in danger and had chosen to live among beasts instead of returning to their home. Alistair could not imagine his son's life on Hachtera, but he knew it couldn't possibly be easy. He'd failed Rain in so many ways. He would not do so again.

Fortunately, Armina had provided him with the personal com-links of several important figures on Hachtera. A stealthy approach was out of the question—his technology might be top notch, but he wasn't arrogant enough to believe he could avoid detection. As such, he had to do things through the regular channels—through money, politics and lies.

The moment he was within the orbit of Hachtera, he activated the com-link of the man Armina had recommended. She'd mentioned this particular Hachti had been very useful during her journey here. Apparently, Rain's Hachti lovers had some enemies of their own, ones who found Rain a weak spot easily exploited. Yet another reason to get Rain out of here as soon as possible, before the same men Alistair now considered allies turned against his son.

His vid-screen came to life and a feline figure popped up at the other side of the connection. "This is Nyedal bi Ornea. State your business with me and on Hachtera."

"I'm Alistair Enderton, CEO of Gaia Industries, of Planet Earth." That probably didn't mean anything to the alien, but a title was always a good thing to have. "I've come to pick up my son, Rain."

"Rain. The... human."

The alien's lips twisted into a sneer that displayed too much fang for Alistair's comfort. Nonetheless, Alistair kept his calm, and nodded. "I have reason to believe that his stay with the slavers affected his judgment and he is not in his right mind. Your support in this matter would be greatly appreciated."

The Hachti hummed thoughtfully. "You realize two of our warriors are greatly attached to your son, do you not?"

This was one area where Alistair had to tread lightly. He had come here more than willing to kill if he had to, but he couldn't outright say so. "I'm sure there has to be some way to convince them to give up their claim."

"Perhaps." The Hachti pursed his lips, which looked a little weird in a creature with so many feline features. "Very well. You will be given permission to land. A delegation will greet you. We will speak more of this matter in person."

The connection was cut off, leaving Alistair to muse over the conversation. The Hachti clearly wanted to get rid of Rain—that much was obvious—but did that truly mean Alistair could trust them? Not in the slightest.
