When I got home that night, I realized I fucked up. I was more angry with myself than with Sageâs request, but I took it out on her anyway. I gave Sage a lot of leeway. Too much sometimes. More than I had given any woman because I was wise enough to know she was special.
The two most important things Pops taught me about being a man are to stand on your word and not run from your mistakes. A man owns them and stands in whatever storm stems from them because you made those decisions. Part of standing in the storm is acknowledging how you fucked up, so I sent Sage flowers to hopefully put a smile on her face because I know she didnât get any rest after our argument.
When Sageâs name lit up my phone, I knew she had received them.
âWassup Mama,â I answered.
âThank you for my flowers,â Her voice held no emotional reaction, maintaining a calm and composed demeanor.
âYouâre welcome.â
âNow you have everybody in the office wondering who my secret admirer is.â
âAs long as them niggaâs know you got one.â
âDo I have one?â She asked to be facetious.
The laughter in my voice held a sharp edge, âI fucked up, so Iâll let you get that off this time but donât ever say no dumb shit like that again.â
âYou just stormed out, so I didnât know.â
Sage knew, but her feelings were still hurt despite my apologetic gesture, and she wouldnât take it easy on me because of it.
âI wasnât mad at you. I was mad at me.â I could see her face in my head, brows furrowed, and lips pressed thin, trying to understand, âI shouldâve stood my ground and kept shit business between us, but you make me need you too, Mama. Now Iâm here doing shit I said Iâd never do.â Shit, I refused to do with Jade, and I had known her much longer than Sage.
Sage couldnât control her laughter, âThe service is terrible here in the office. Can you repeat that?â
âIâm not doing that shit again, Sage, so next time itâs gonâ be what itâs gonâ be. Did you hear that?â
There was a momentary pause, likely because Sage knew what that meant.
Gram always said out of sight, out of mind is a real thing. The challenge is looking them in the eyes. Seeing their smile. Hearing their voice and being able to say this isnât what I want. I couldnât do that with Sage to save my fuckinâ life, nor could she.
âI hear you, Kairo. What are you doing today?â
âGolfing with my father-in-law.â
âWhat?â She stifled a chuckle, not expecting that response.
âJeremiah and Jameson are going too.â
âDo you even know how to golf?â
âFuck no,â I laughed, dreading spending my day on the golf course.
âYou have fun with that.â
âI doubt that I will. It's just more hoops and shit to jump through.â
âSometimes you have to do things you donât want to do. Thatâs life, Kairo.â
âTrust me, I know. Iâd rather be doing you right now, but I canât.
